Goals

L&I’s Early Claim Solutions project will test methods for reducing the time between the onset of a worker’s injury or illness and when the worker receives the first time-loss check.

How L&I will reduce cycle-time

The Early Claim Solutions team will:

  • Work more closely - and earlier - with health-care providers, employers, and workers.
  • Test new internal processes for processing claims.

Project focus

During the project’s first phase, we will be contacting health-care providers in Snohomish, Skagit, Whatcom, Island, and San Juan counties to invite them to participate in Early Claim Solution. We will also be reaching out to employers and workers.

We will be working to reduce the number of days it takes L&I to:

  • Receive the report of accident following the date of first medical treatment.
  • Process the initial report of accident.
  • Make initial decisions about whether to approve or deny the claim.
  • Refer appropriate cases for specialized L&I services.
  • Begin paying benefits.

Impacts of first phase

Due to the short time-frame of the project’s first phase, we won't be able to see potential impacts on long-term claim costs. However, we will be looking at costs earlier in the life of the claim as well as at customer satisfaction.
