Job Summary:

This position ensures compliance with safety and health regulations by performing scheduled inspections, investigating accidents, and employee complaints. The Safety and Health Specialist conducts safety inspections and investigations in various industries such as logging, agriculture, construction and manufacturing.

The Safety and Health Specialist will:
  • Visually inspect worksites to discover safety and health hazards, and offers advice on abatement methods.
  • Issue citations, proposes monetary penalties.
  • Write technical reports documenting employee exposure to safety and health hazards.
  • Defends those citations at appeal hearings, both informal and formal.
  • Provide technical assistance in abatement strategies of hazards.
  • Perform follow-up inspections as necessary.
  • Assist in training new inspectors and attend training to improve professional knowledge.
  • Participate in presentations, discussions or outreach efforts as appropriate.




Preferred Qualification:

A Bachelor’s degree and two years of experience as a safety and health officer, consultant, inspector or related experience.

OR

Four years experience in one or more of the following industries: logging, construction, manufacturing, fishing, agriculture, and health/medical, service industry or related experience, and two years of experience as a safety and health officer, consultant, inspector or related experience.

 

Knowledge application of:

Washington Industrial Safety and Health Administration and Occupational Safety and Health Administration rules and regulations with the ability to explain to customers what their businesses must do to comply with these regulations.

 

Skills and Abilities:
  • Excellent interpersonal skills ability to deal with difficult situations and individuals with tact and diplomacy.
  • Maintain good working relationships among internal and external customers.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Listen and identify issues, provide options, fulfill services and assist and resolve complaints or conflicts.
  • Enforce laws, rules and regulations and initiates enforcement actions, fairly, objectively and reasonably.
  • Inspect and move around the worksite.
  • Use inspection tools, equipment and measuring devices.
  • Basic computer skills to write reports, receive and send e-mail, receive and make work assignments.
  • Prioritize and multiple tasks while handling interruptions appropriately.
  • Set and adhere to priorities.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
