Job Summary:

This position makes decisions on self insured industrial insurance claims regarding a worker’s entitlement to vocational services and time loss compensation in accordance with industrial insurance laws and rules. Provides direct customer service to injured workers, vocational providers, self insured employer, third party administrator, and their representatives.

The Vocational Services Specialist will:
  • Review claims and interpret facts to make employability decisions about self insured workers that can be disputed by the worker or employer.
  • Review medical and vocational reports submitted by the employer for correctness to determine if a worker is able to work.
  • Make decisions on contested vocational issues such as transferring an assigned counselor, assess need for evaluation, determine appropriate vocational plan, and recommend penalty if employer fails to comply with vocational rules.
  • Determine whether to terminate or reinstate a self insured worker’s time loss benefits; suspend benefits for non-cooperation.
  • Provide education and training regarding self insurance vocational issues, policy and procedures to external customers.
  • Approve job modification requests.

 
Required Qualifications:

A Master's Degree AND a CRC, CDMS or ABVE certification
AND ONE year of full time industrial insurance experience.

OR

A Bachelor's Degree AND a CRC or CDMS certification
AND TWO years full time industrial insurance experience.

CRC = Certified Rehabilitation Counselor; CDMS = Certified Disability Management Specialist; ABVE = American Board of Vocational Experts.

 

Preferred Qualification:

Experience as a vocational services consultant in either the State Fund or the Self Insurance section of the Department of Labor an Industries or experience providing direct vocational services to injured workers in the State of Washington.


Knowledge of:

Industrial Insurance laws and rules regarding vocational rehabilitation services.

 

Skills and Abilities:
  • Communicate effectively with medical professionals, attorneys, claims staff, unions, and employers.
  • Review and analyze complex case related information to facilitate case management.
  • Produce reports and documents in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Develop training modules; develop policies and procedures.
  • Build effective relationships and partnerships.
  • Mediate disputes and negotiate agreements.
  • Remain calm under stressful conditions when dealing with hostile clients.
  • Testify at the Board of Industrial Insurance Appeals.
  • Able to travel occasionally.
