Job Summary:

This Industrial Hygienist provides technical support on occupational health issues to business, labor, and DOSH field and central office staff. This position researches and analyzes available information and data to resolve health & safety issues, verifies the technical content of written materials, drafts technical documents and presentations, delivers presentations on technically complex subjects, and acts as a DOSH liaison to various stakeholder groups and government agencies.

 

The Industrial Hygienist 4 will:
  • Provide technical support in the areas of Asbestos, Noise/Hearing Loss
  • Prevention and Emergency Washing Facilities.
  • Conduct research on occupational health hazards.
  • Draft rule clarifications, interpretations, bulletins, presentations, and other technical correspondence.
  • Participate in the Department’s Asbestos Certification Program, review certification applications, monitor department recordkeeping and certification processes, and work with certificates on department policy and guidance issues.
  • Consult with Regional staff and central support personnel
  • Attend public hearings and legal proceedings.
  • Conduct worksite evaluations as necessary.
  • Deliver technical training and presentations.

Preferred Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree involving major study in, Occupational Safety or Health, Industrial Hygiene, Chemistry, Physics, Chemical, Mechanical or Sanitary Engineering, Environmental Science, Nursing, Biology, or related field.

AND

Five years of experience as an industrial hygienist working in the field

 

Knowledge of:

Occupational health hazards and regulatory protections related to Asbestos, Noise/Hearing Loss Prevention and Emergency Washing Facilities.

 

Skills and Abilities:
  • Recognize chemical, biological, and physical hazards (such as noise, non-ionizing radiation) associated with industrial processes, tasks, operations.
  • Use exposure monitoring strategies and techniques to take direct measurements or collect samples of a gas, vapor, particulate, and other agents for analysis.
  • Interpret data and information to determine exposures.
  • Determine appropriate exposure controls and personal protective equipment for processes, tasks, and operations.
  • Analyze and interpret technical materials including DOSH regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Write technical documents that are easy to use and understand.
  • Strong facilitation and presentation skills.
  • Work effectively in a team setting.

  • Prior to any new appointment into L&I, a background check, including criminal record history, will be conducted.
  • Employees driving on state business must have a valid driver’s license. Employees driving a privately owned vehicle on state business must have liability insurance on the privately-owned vehicle.
