Job Summary:

This position inspects workplaces to ensure compliance with safety and health regulations and to ensure the safety of Washington’s workers. Writes reports, proposes penalties, investigates accidents, investigates employee complaints, provides technical assistance in abatement of hazards, and assists in training new inspectors in various industries such as agriculture, manufacturing, and construction.

 

Safety and Health Specialist will:
  • Visually inspect worksites to identify safety and health hazards and offer advice on abatement strategies and methods.
  • Investigate accidents and employee complaints of safety and health conditions.
  • Write technical reports documenting employee exposure, issue citations and propose monetary penalties.
  • Defend citations at appeal hearings, both informal and formal.
  • Assist in training new inspectors and attend training to improve professional knowledge.

 

 

Preferred Qualifications :

Four years experience in heavy industries, operating machinery including but not limited to, lathes, press brakes, drill presses, sanders, and saws of various types and sizes.


Or


Four years experience in the construction trades including but not limited to carpenter, plumber/pipe fitter, electrician, masonry (brick or concrete), iron work, roofing, framing, laborer, etc.


Or


A Bachelors of Science Degree in Safety and Health Management or related field.

Additional Preferred Experience: Two years experience as a safety professional, consultant, inspector or related experience.


 

Knowledge of:

Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act (WISHA) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rules and regulations

  • Use a variety of inspection tools, equipment, and measuring devices.
  • Travel between jobsites, inspect, and move around the worksite.
  • Maintain good working relationships with co-workers.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Basic computer skills to write reports, receive and send e-mail, receive and make work assignments
  • Follow directions and adhere to priorities.
