* This position may be filled at Industrial Hygienist level 2 in-training to Industrial Hygienist level 3, or directly into Industrial Hygienist level 3 based on skills, abilities and experience of the successful candidate.

 

Job Summary:

As an L&I Industrial Hygienist you will perform routine and complex work place inspections and investigations for all types of occupational health hazards. Inspections are conducted in all industries to determine compliance with the Division of Occupational Safety & Health (DOSH) worker safety and health standards to prevent occupational illness and disease. You will be primarily responsible for standards that address health hazards as may be presented by noise and chemical exposure.

 

The Industrial Hygienist will:

Perform complex, technical, and large-scale investigations of workplaces to determine the type and extent of chemical and physical occupational health hazards and assess compliance with L&I standards.

Exercise compliance authority in issuing citations including orders of immediate restraint; write reports, and propose penalties.

Conduct accident investigations of fatalities, catastrophes, serious injuries, and determine direct and indirect causes of the accidents. Investigate employee complaints and general referrals. Lead complex inspections involving other Safety & Health Inspectors and Industrial Hygienists. Provide technical assistance in abatement of hazards. Assist in training new inspectors.

Use industrial hygiene sampling equipment and techniques for analysis and measurement of noise, chemicals, non-ionizing radiation, and temperature for comparison with exposure limits for use in making recommendations involving complex and feasible engineering controls, use of personal protective, and safe work practices.



 
Preferred Qualifications:

 

Industrial Hygienist level 3:
Bachelor's degree involving major study in: occupational safety and/or health, industrial hygiene, sciences, nursing, medicine, or related field
AND
Three years of experience as an Industrial Hygienist.

A Master's degree involving major study in industrial hygiene or related field will substitute for one year of industrial hygiene experience.

Industrial Hygienist level 2:
Bachelor's degree involving major study in: occupational safety and/or health, industrial hygiene, sciences, nursing, medicine, or related field
AND
One year of experience as an Industrial Hygienist, Safety & Health Officer, Safety & Health Consultant or other related scientific or safety and health work.

A Master's degree involving major study in industrial hygiene or related field will substitute for one year of industrial hygiene experience.


 
Knowledge of:

Safety and Health Rules and Regulations - possession of a thorough understanding of both WISHA (Washington Industrial Safety and Health Administration) and OSHA (federal government's Occupational Safety and Health Administration) rules and regulations. Understand and able to explain to customers what their businesses must do to comply with these regulations.

 

 

Skills and Abilities:
  • Skilled in recognition, evaluation, and control of occupational health hazards in a variety of industries, including skills in sampling and direct measuring techniques for chemical, physical hazards, noise and non-ionizing radiation.
  • Express ideas and information clearly and concisely both verbally and in writing.
  • Efficiently identify, collect, organize and document data and information useful for subsequent assessment, analysis, and investigation.
  • Effectively organize and prioritize multiple, complex assignments while handling interruptions.
  • Use a personal computer to produce accurate work products, access electronic mail and navigate the internet.
  • Build and maintain effective networks of contacts that are useful in achieving work-related goals.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with and assist upset confused, demanding or otherwise difficult clients, customers or consumers.
  • Maintain high levels of confidentiality at all times.
  • Must possess a valid Washington State Driver’s License and proof of vehicle insurance.

  • Prior to any new appointment into L&I, a background check, including criminal record history, will be conducted.
  • Employees driving on state business must have a valid driver’s license.  Employees driving a privately owned vehicle on state business must have liability insurance on the privately-owned vehicle.
