* This position may be filled at Industrial Hygienist level 2 in-training to Industrial Hygienist level 3, or directly into Industrial Hygienist level 3 based on skills, abilities and experience of the successful candidate.

 

Job Summary:

As an Industrial Hygienist you will identify, and enforce correction of, safety and health hazards to which employees are exposed in workplaces in the State of Washington. You will perform inspections and investigations in any industry within Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) Region 5, to determine compliance with Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act (WISHA) workplace health standards. Those standards focus on preventing occupational illness and disease caused by exposure to noise, chemicals, physical agents or biological agents.

 

The Industrial Hygienist will:
  • Issue Orders of Immediate Restraint, and may initiate obtaining of subpoenas or warrants for entry.
  • Collect air and bulk samples of hazardous materials.
  • Measure airborne chemical exposures, noise frequency and intensity, air flows, temperatures and humidity.
  • Conduct pre- and post-inspection calibrations and packages samples for shipment to the laboratory.
  • Conduct opening and closing conference with employer and employee representatives.
  • Take field notes, photos, video, and make observations.
  • Conduct interviews, review data, reports or records provided by employer or employee representatives.
  • Evaluate the use of protective methods, safe work practices, and engineering controls.
  • Determine employer's compliance or non-compliance with safety and health standards.
  • Make decisions in accord with laws, agency standards, manuals and policies.
  • Prepare and present reports of investigations both verbally and in writing
  • Lead and instruct lower-level industrial hygienists in specialized investigations.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree involving major study in occupational safety and/or health; industrial hygiene; chemistry; physics; chemical, mechanical or sanitary engineering; environmental science; nursing; medicine; biology or related field.

AND

Three years of experience as an industrial hygienist.

A master's degree involving major study in industrial hygiene or related field will substitute for one year of experience.

 

Knowledge of:
Knowledge of Safety and Health Standards with a thorough understanding of the WISHA (Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act) standards relating to health hazards.

  • Use a computer produce written documents and navigate the Internet to research information.
  • Set and adhere to priorities, meet productivity standards, deadlines and work schedules.

  • Maintain confidentiality

  • Prior to any new appointment into L&I, a background check, including criminal record history, will be conducted.
  • Employees driving on state business must have a valid driver’s license.  Employees driving a privately owned vehicle on state business must have liability insurance on the privately-owned vehicle.
