ICSEW Home I InterAct Newsletters I Members I Issues I Hot Links I Calendar of Events I Health & Wellness
I would like to see ICSEW involved all employees, not just those who are respresentatives of our agency. Somehow the word never gets to us as to what is going on. Down below you asked about when I read the InterAct Newsletter. I'm sorry but what newsletter?
There should be a statewide wellness program, including opportunities for state employees to buy into reduced-rate fitness programs/memberships.
Coordinate with a local Fitness clubs to create a state employees discount. Like SPRINT does.
Agency Team competition. For example: Each agency putting together a basketball team and scheduling games during winter to play against eachother at local YMCA or school gymnasiums.
I'd like to see more on self-defense but in the F.I.S.T. (Feminists in Self-defense Training)model -- emphasis more on avoiding, escaping, asserting oneself rather than on physically fighting back.
How to translate experience into eductation.
Yes. Professional growth is a concern these days. Any kind of activity or event that would lend itself to communicating how important sincerity is to growth would be much appreciated. And if sincerity is less important, then what is more important?
Too busy. I barely have time to go to the bathroom.
I think the idea of providing us with health & wellness activities and events is great. It would be nice to hear more about ICSEW within our agency (HECB) - I have worked here 6 years and have heard virtually nothing about ICSEW and what it offers for state employees. If either ICSEW directly or our representatives within the agency would keep us informed of what is happening, it would greatly appreciated. P.S. In reference to #7 below - have never heard about the InterAct newsletter - where can one get a copy?
It would be great to have a professional counselors that worked with individiuals one on one. It is great to get information, but people have specific professional decisions and questions that may not get addressed in a classroom setting or having predetermined information layed out to view. If this is not possible, perhaps an interactive web site where women can send their questions about career building to a real-time counselor who manages the site.
I need training on using my digital camera and a GPS unit.
It would be nice to get some arobic class' both high and low going for right after work.
I'd like my agency to contract with a qualified masseuse to do regular on-site, work-hours massage; I'd also appreciate agency-supported (through fees scholarships or subsidies) health club memberships for older or at-risk employees. Both would promote health and thereby increase productivity and decrease missed days.
Exercise classes held during the day (noon), or immediately following work hours at my workplace would best address my health and wellness issues
I don't have any specific ideas but I would like to be notified about upcoming events. This last month I found out about 3 events after one was passed and when I tried to obtain information about the other two I was directed from one person to another and the second person didn't respond to my request for information at all. Absolutely no acknowledgment of my request.
How about agency sponsored, paid, or at least subsidized, memberships to fitness facilities like the Y?
Provide access to the recreational facilities available on our site (The Evergreen State College) without charge
This survey should include boxes for "none are of interest" and similar
I'm half-time, so a lot of the health and wellness presentations at work either eat into my limited work hours or occur when I'm not working. I just generally don't participate in these activities as a result. Sorry not to have more input. For my own use, I like webbased information that I am notified of by email, because then I can peruse on my own time.
These are stressful times and many people, myself included, find it hard to motivate themselves to get up early to exercise before work. Something to help with the motivation factor and stress reduction would help greatly.
I would like to see monthly articles on topics dealing with working mothers, both single and married (i.e., budgeting, balancing family and a fulltime job, career advancement, etc.). I would like to read occasional articles and stories submitted by successful women in different fields willing to share their experiences, both good and bad in the workforce. I believe these submissions will motivate entry and mid level employees that are struggling with the hard decisions about their careers. I would also like to meet and hear some of these women speak about these experiences.
Emphasis on women's heart health.
I would like to see that state agencies work with their employees in regards to workplace health & wellness. I see great benefits in either bringing in nutritionists, personal trainers or having the agency make the effort to give us the oppourtunity to do this outside of the agency. Most are not aware of how easy it is to eat right and get in an exercise routine. It is something that has to be taught and a lot of people are afraid of gyms and/or don't know the benefits of having a nutritionist to help plan healthy meals. There are so many people I see in my own agency who are overweight and SO unhappy. Whether it be 10lbs or 75lbs. If you are not happy with yourself, it is hard to be happy about anything else. On a side note, I work at an agency that doesn't have a cafeteria. This doubles the stress when it comes to eating. If you don't bring a lunch you have no other option but to buy from one of the local places (Happy Teriyaki, La Taqueria, Starbucks, Peppers, McDonalds, ect.) We need to offer heathly choices in-house. Thank you for your time.
Yes. I would love it to be done in an environmentally friendly way too, if possible (less paper to advertise etc if folks can effectively hear via email/web, less waste from trainings by recycling, and food not used donated to local shelter etc.). I think that agencies should be more accountable to workplace health and wellness. Looking at the culture of the office/workplace in a deeper way and how it either contributes to or is an adversary to health and wellness practices. This, of course, is not short-term nor an expectation of one person or committee, just an idealist's desire. :) I would love to see information disseminated to management that helps them to understand the issues and find ways to foster such an environment in realistic, small ways leading to larger organizational culture shifts where needed. I would also love to have more support for attending health and wellness activities/trainings during work hours. Right now I'm limited to what is offered on my days off, evenings or weekends. I think an agency health fair or day to increase awareness would be wonderful. I think that setting up mentoring is also a fantastic idea. I would also like to see more training offered to management as they are to be the leaders and models for practices, change and culture. I find that as a "Program Coordinator 3" I am in a management position of sorts, not WMS officially - but I have a lot of responsibility without authority at times. This can be disempowering, but it is also a huge learning challenge. I would like support to increase communication skills, managing up skills, and advocacy skills. I think that would help me maintain a healthier balance in work satisfaction. Thank you.
Definately health and wellness. Too many women are suffering and dying from breast cancer.
What about diabetes?
I would like to see a lunch hour yoga class offered near the Capitol campus, or if there is such a class, to know how to find out about it and other opportunities like it.
I appreciate these efforts to promote professional and personal health, however, due to agency budget constraints we are often unable to participate because of the registration costs. Are you able to provide scholarships or low- or no-cost trainings? Thank you for asking for our input!
I would like to see career paths that address health and aging issues. Alternative work schedules to a 40 hour week; part-time and tandom employment opportunities. They are suppose to be an option but "how to" develop or promote these options within an agency without a negative response.
I think your ideas above are terrific and would most appreciate them. However, due to the fact that our office is not in the Olympia/Seattle area, but a regional office, our participation in most events is very limited if available to us at all. It's really sad because we miss out on a lot of great opportunities you provide.
Staff who are not in Olympia or Spokane, miss out. ANYTHING you can do to make things more available "out in the boonies", is greatly appreciated. MANY employees DO NOT have access to the InTRAnet, so when someone in Olympia gives a link to the database, it does us no good.
I'm very interested in attending classes about career goals.
I have coordinated our regional wellness committee for the past 4 and 1/2 years; a lot of staff are interested about health concerns as one growns older. I would like to see information for the younger generation (like me) to help prepare myslef for "aging" and what steps we need to take for planning.
I think that it is so important to take care of our body and mind. Taking care of ourselves from within really reflects who we are and shows on the outside. It really gives a better quality of existance so we can better serve our jobs, enjoy our lives, be better parents, enjoy our time with our children and etc.. I also think it is a great employee motivator, and moral booster for any Agency or Department.
Flu shots offered in each agency next fall would be great. I think most people would be willing to pay $10 or $20 for the convenience of having a nurse come to their agency so they can get a flu shot.
health and wellness topics are female oriented, if you want responses from males please adjust your survey
My basis for a "statewide" response is due to the fact my agency is not proactive in providing information/seminars re: any of the above topics. Providing any information is greatly appreciated. Personnally, I'd like to see workshops (health, nutrition, fitness - see current seminars sponsored by the hospital) for female state employees +40.
workshops on dealing with difficult people, communication skills, stress/anxiety managament techniques
Yes. There are no activities in this agency that promote "professional" growth internally or externally. Do not feel a lot of support in this area. Thank you.
I would be interested in most of the health and wellness topics. I would participate in activities and special events but I've never seen any offered. This is very exciting. I feel that when your are healthy (diet/exercise) you are a better employee. Therefore, it is essential to offer these type of programs for more efficient and happy employees. I also would like to see more Weight Watcher At Work programs and Exercise programs come to various agencies to help employee improve their health.
A health conference for women either during work time or on a Saturday in the local area.
This is not an activity or special event, but... are there any State facilities which include [small] gyms or "work-out" rooms? I suspect other people are like me -- find it hard to make the time to get to a gym, and reluctant to pay the high membership fees that are charged at private gyms (even the YMCA gets pretty expensive...). If a no-cost/low-cost facility was near my workplace (a Point Plaza building in Tumwater) I would be more likely to get to a gym, either during lunch or before or after work. I have heard that some private companies/corporations provide small gyms for their employees because in the long run the company saves money as the result of having healthier employees (naturally, since exercise improves health, which helps reduce absenteeism in the workplace, improves overall productivity, etc...) Perhaps future State buildings could include some sort of "health" facilities-- nothing extravagent, but at least have an area for exercise. (Of course, the issue of public access, using "public money" would need to be dealt with first...).
Promoting wellness is a huge challenge. I think the majority of the people I speak with would like direction as to different ways they can promote.
body image issues fitness and wellness at any size non-dieting approaches to health and wellness
This organization has outlived its purpose. Why in the world do we need an Interagency Committee of State Employeed Women. If men tried to have a similar committee, we'd be branded as sexists. Women make up more than 50% of state employees and have done very well moving into leadership positions. Disband this committee and form a committee for State Employees. And please don't try to tell me that men are welcome at your events. Why would a man want to go to an event that it titled for State Employeed Women? No offense intended and I'm sure you all believe in what you are doing. Your group is offensive to state employeed men!
Years ago DOP had a state employee wellness program. The agencies were give some funding to implement wellness events and programs at the agency level. With all of the budget cuts this has disappeared. Because we talk most often with others in our agencies, it makes more sense to keep this type of program in the agencies. There is also some peer pressure when your friend asks you to participate. When it is an advertised statewide event it's too easy to let it slip by.
Flu shots available at various state office locations.
I don't have new ideas....just think you do a terrific job already.
I would love an affordable all weekend long event. I would love to work on it also.
1. There is a need for classes to assist employees in the "art" of interviewing for a job and taking oral tests. Learning how to "keep talking" and communicating all of the steps needed to perform a function is critical for the interview process but we aren't trained how to interview successfully. 2. Training on writing resumes, letter of interest and cover letters would be useful. 3. Understanding "what" management is looking for in the job announcements would be helpful, ie., Project Manager means different things to different jobs / employers. At what point is someone embellishing or lying about their skills and job titles? How creative can someone get without jeopardizing their employment? 4. Need more resources to help with career achievement but also need to know the risks involved in taking a job at another agency or in an unprotected position (WMS). Do we have reversion rights? For how long? Does every agency handle personnel issues the same way?
Please don't forget that we are not all stationed in Tumwater. I would like to see opportunities in Spokane too.
aging workforce issues
we had a wonderful one day health fair a few months ago. it included vendors and discounted health tests. I greatly appreciated the opportunity to attend that health fair-----please hold more health fairs like that one.
I (and probably a number of my coworkers) would like to get some guidance on dealing with stress & frustration in an unhealthy work environment. Our job is very stressful and demanding-- more work that can be done within 40 hours per week. But added to that is the in-house stresses-- bureaucratic decisions that are counter-productive (but we're blamed for being inflexible) and impede our ability to do our job, there is a large number of us so we are treated like cattle and dehumanized, an apparent negative view of us by mid- low management, etc. So- a very difficult job within an adverse work environment. I would like help with coping skills, politics, and guidance on how to try to influence positive change in an effective manner in a challenging unhealthy environment like this.
I would like to see a mentoring program that would help/advise one to advance the professional ladder.(Progression programs) So many time you ask for a mentor but no one really has the time or you feel like you are wasting their time asking for help.
Comprehensive Health Fair, with health testing ie, BP, etc. Offer flu shots and other immunizations on site. Fitness activites, with an area to stretch, since L & I no longer has a fitness center. Consider re-opening of the fitness center at L & I.
Cost of classes is an issue for me.
support groups for single parenting (balancing work/family on your own)
I'm very concerned about the growing problem of obesity at our agency, L&I, especially among women. You have an opportunity to target an essentially captive audience by providing, for example, motivational speakers on the topic of weight loss, inexpensive/low calorie food demonstrations in our large cafeteria, or walk-around-the-building challenges (we have a 1 mile loop around our Tumwater Building. Any one of these things is likely to create some kind of buzz at our agency. It's something a lot of women here would rally around, if handled sensitively.
Interaction/assertion with assertive male supervisors.
HEALTH RECEIPES-
How to cope with catastrophic illness of self/child/spouse and manage your work responsibilities. Dental health/oral hygiene
EXERCISE AND WEIGHT LOSS CLASS
Have a place to do yoga (not chair yoga).
yes
financial aid for training/schooling, on-line courses
Because I am at a regional office, I think it is important to have activities at a local level so that I don't need to travel so far to get to them.
Present at the Diversity Fair August 4th. Provide CD's with detailed diet and naturopathic solutions for a healthy lifestyle Organized walks around capitol lake/etc.
Agency's walk or run events, veggie snaks day
Yes. Some time of fair that staff can attend. Maybe a saturday workshop, as some employees have difficulting getting time off.
I would like to see diet meetings resumed for the agency. At one time Weight Watchers was here. Couldn't drum enough people to make it worth their while. Perhaps the agency could assist those, that cannot afford something like this, given all the attention to health problems that obesity can cause.
Thank you for the survey. I am a new State Employee and am very interested in staying healthy and fit on the job. I believe it makes me a more alert, confident worker. I walk as much as possible, incorporating lunch time and commutes. I had not heard of your committee and welcome the opportunties you are presenting in regards to health, wellness and professional development.
Ideas to get in more exercise during the day for those of us who spend a lot of time at a desk
More information about traditional medicine and balancing mind, body and spirit.
Workshops that help women develop professional leadership skills.
Yes. How to dress for success, interview techniques, ideas about networking. How to speak so people will listen.
Adjusting to empty nest Families with college age adults Cooking healthy meals-receipes What to wear in the lastest in fashions and hair styles
Yes I would. I think the boxes I've checked above indicate how these could be delivered effectively.
Help for parents who have rebellious children How to get the state to help with removing rebellious children out of the home without parent getting into trouble
yes,
What I would REALLY like is a focus on self-acceptance, both body and mind. Our social focus so often seems to be about how we are not good enough as we are--and often to an extreme degree. Not out of nowhere do we get 8 year old anorexics and 5 year olds complaining they are fat. As women, we are taught that our bodies are never good enough, and in fact, that WE are never good enough, and so rather than living our lives and trying to evolve into the best people we can be, we spend our lives battering away at ourselves in an effort we tell ourselves is to make us better. What it more often seems like is a desperate attempt to escape a self we hate for its imperfections. How many of us tend ourselves well because of self-love? And, too, at what point is what we are enough? Can we finally release all this anxiety and pressure and settle into our selves and our lives and enjoy them? Can we evolve past the media-driven concept of beauty and appreciate who we are? We need to think out of the box--that what is healthy and good for each individual varies. That some people will never be able to be what society pressures us to be--and that they are just fine as they are as long as they are happy and as healthy as they are capable of being. When you are finally enough for yourself, as it turns out, the rest often falls into place without so much angst and frantic struggle. Perhaps, at last, we could focus on that.
All of the activities seem to be in the Olympia area. Those of us down here in Vancouver (Clark County) don't find them convenient to attend.
A "Bring Your Child to Work" day.
What about sponsoring various walks?
Yes
Get discounts to fitness centers,(YMCA,YWCA, etc) for ALL state employees.
Preventive Health Care
Have presentations and games in the local office
Building strength and bonding between women of different ethnicities. It seems to have gone unnoticed that there is sometimes tension between women of color and white women. In my agency, They don't mix. I think we should explore this. Thanks
Brown bag informational and/or networking events
The most successful health/wellness program that I have participated in started with a health screening day and then 12 weeks of tracking physical activity with prizes for participating.
I would like to see more workshops scheduled late fall through spring. Our staff would have more flexibility to attend during that time. I would like to see more classes on the east side of the mountain. I feel that a workshop pointing out the fact that women are the ones who are responsible for their own life and they need to take the responsibility to manage it would be beneficial.
I would love to go to seminars or brown bag lunches put on the by the ICSEW. However, I do not feel like my agency approves of these kind of self-help trainings. Management has disproved employees going to ICSEW training except by taking annual leave and self-paying for the seminars. So I do not ask to attend the seminars which cost my agency money. If you could get the Governor or our upper management to come on board and openly approve employees attending this wonderful training, I would then request the opportunity to go. I think the topics of your training sound wonderful.
Nothing comes to mind at this time
I'd like to learn more about HR2005 changes and planning for a career after retirement.
It would be nice to have some things here in Seattle, especially during non working hours. That might give us a chance to meet more people & learn new skills but not have to take time off from work.
It would be nice to have some things here in Seattle, especially during non working hours. That might give us a chance to meet more people & learn new skills but not have to take time off from work.
I would like to see regular Yoga, Tai Chi, and/or Ki Gong practices in and around state offices before and after work, and during the noon hour.
I didn't see anything on the above list that was directly related to occupational health. I don't see enough opportunity for training on Occ health issues. Also, rather than offeer more talk classes, how about more passes to the Activity Center or getting walking groups together or yoga that we didn't have to pay for. I am probably one of many on campus who cannot get away for classes without adversly impacting my workplace activities...after work options and weekend access would be great.
It would be great if there were more classes (during work hours, after-hours, and weekends) that were held up in the Mt. Vernon/Bellingham area.
How about after hours web based training sessions that we can access from home
Speakers and presentations on Women's health and wellness issues similar to a recent series Providence St. Peter's Hospital sponsored in the Olympia area. Topics such as healthy aging, health issues specific to women, diet and exercise information for women, stress management for balanceing a the busy life of a working mom, balancing work and family, mental and physical health on the job.
Sponsoring agency based weight loss groups and other wellness activities. Getting into and staying in a fitness routine is much easier with some mutual support/accountability. I would like assistance with finding other employees with similar interests and fitness levels/goals for mutual support or fitness groups.
I would like to see special events that promote professional growth - how to get to the next level with further education, certification or mentoring.
Anything related to health and wellness would be appreciated. Also, information regarding the aging workforce, specifically employed women, and how older women can seek out opportunities and overcome obstacles that may stand in the way of their advancement or education in their current or alternative career field. It would be great if more workshops and training could be held in southwest Washington, particularly Vancouver. I would think there would be an interest. I have wanted to attend some of the trainings in the past, but decided against it because of the long drive to and from the training, in addition to the training hours. Thanks for doing this survey!
I would like to see a combination of the above. For example we could get e-mail notices like the payroll stuffers letting us know about articles with the link. That link would take us to the wellness site so that we could see that particular artilce and others if desired.
issues relating to the hiring, training and retaining of people over 50. Also how to overcome institutational discrimination for people over 50. The different work philosophies of people currently age 25 to 35 and those over 55.
So far, my favorite article has been on the take and go meals in January. Dinners Done and Meal of the Month. My problem is tht I live in the Tri-Cities and I would like to see something like that down here.
I would like to have access to health screening activities like cholesterol testing, body fat measurement, etc Also, expand the scope of ICSEW to include resources for men and minorities
Need a course on how to move successfully from a rural city to a larger city approx. 50 miles or more away, in order to get a promotion. Also, determining if it is better to commute rather than move.
I think if some of the health and wellness information was presented as some type of competition, either walking as a group or singly and then some type of reward for both the "best" group and "best" single person to accomplish this. Even though it is a game type situation, it accomplishes the health benefits that many of us need.
I would like to see a program in place that encourages healthy living and increased activity committment where a program of rewards could be in place. The person could meet with someone to get blood pressure, weight and body measurements (optional, but better for tracking results) and then at intervals recheck with tracking and goal tracking leading to levels of rewards. Minor things like water bottles, or shoe laces up to umbrella or shirts for reaching or exceeding goals.
I would love to have a fitness class of some sort on the worksite. Possible some kind of resistance training or aerobics.
re: Q#1 and Q#5, the online survey program permitted selection of more than 3 boxes, so I checked all that interest me. I make a point of reading every issue, as each is certain to contain something of value, so thanks and keep up the good work.
None of this provides any help unless you can make it mandatory for managers to let us participate in it. Mine won't agree to let us participate in any social activity, aside from an occassional birthday cake, outside our immediate project.
This survey, as well as your entire organization, discriminates against men!! Inasmuch as a woman's average lifespan exceeds a man's by some 6 or 7 years, why are you wasting our time on this stuff? Can't it be done outside of work hours on your own time, NOT the taxpayers? How about some courses on men's health issues - prostate care, workplace stress associated with working a real job, child visitation rights, etc.????
no.
Workplace support for nursing mothers, and mothers of small children. Childcare issues.
Perhaps a training on the employee evaluation process?
Information should be inclusive and recognize all kinds of families, including lesbians with families.
Thank you but I do not need any of your help
fitness for people with disabilities.
Speakers that have knowlege about where to find various types of information and can give that in laymans terms.
Some agencies get a health/wellnes newsletter weekly. I think this is helpful to keep abreast of what current issues/treatments are available.
Working for state government is stressful. Stress reduction training needs to be provided at every workplace.
Health Heart Checks
How about extending our lunches by 15 minutes if we exercise on our lunch? This is pretty common in private industry and the impact probably isn't too profound for most departments. You can ensure that the supervisor has the final word on if this works for their group or not.
Provide work our equipment withiin foocie area.
Wellness walking, exercise, diet program. Keep track of your activities over some period of time then are entered into a drawing for something.
There used to be a 1 day Interviewing course that video taped you and was open for group suggestion. I would like to update this as I last took it about 10 years ago but it is no longer offered. Also, classes to learn how to better transfer skills and opportunities for lateral career growth as middle management seems to be under fire.
How to work in a hostile work environment? How to cope with No? Not taking critisism personally when it really appears to be?
I'm interested in ergonomics in the workplace. I took a new position in a new office, was given a workstation that turned out to be detrimental to my health (contracted bursitis in my shoulder) because I didn't realize that the work station was the problem until I was in a great deal of pain. If supervisors were more aware of the health issues and subsequent claims that are caused by improper lighting, outdated and broken down chairs, and improper desk height; we would probably have less L & I claims and healthier employees. I think these issues tend to be blown off as "not important" because its hard to identify that the workstation is the problem. Thanks, Debby Black
It would be nice to know what is out there. We have no access to what is really available to all state employees. At WSDOT if your supervisor takes no interest in your training or avancement you are SOL. The same classes are available to others in the same office for tuition reimbursement. It is specialization at its worst. Even though WSDOT is supposed to be the lead agency for commuter reduction and telework, not all employees are allowed to have the alternative work schedules or work from home.
Have you seen the website Medkeep.com by Mission Medical Technologies in Lakewood that helps with tracking nutrition, exercise carbohydrates, diabetes, asthma, heart issues etc. This would be of interest to a lot of folks, according to the website, there is also a wellness center program for employers etc that cost is minimal $5.00 or under per employee
How about a workshop on the rights of exempt employees. Can your boss really make you work as much as she wants?
I don't get to attend classes during work time like other employees are allowed to do. I don't get to stay overnight in the town that has the class, I have to leave aroung 4 am in the morning and use my own time to drive to Olympia for a class.
health concerns for the older worker
Try to partner with clubs or the local YMCA to get membership discounts.
I would like to see a health and wellness fair put on such as the one at DIS. Please do screening of cholestrol and blood pressure screenings, healthy heart tips, food demonstrations etc. They have a really wonderful program. People need hands on things that are easy and accessable.
In general these seem to be well balanced. I usually don't participate either because they are not appropriate for me or I don't want to take time off work and it is not work related.
Health programs we can inititate as we start to reach retirement age? And programs we should continue after retirement?
I'm interested in acquiring tools that will help me to effectively deal with a heavy workload and the stress that accompanies it. Relaxation therapies, meditation, and yoga come to mind, and I'm sure there are other ideas out there.
Can't think of any at this time
It just seems easier for State Employees to get away from their work stations when there's trainings arranged as a state wide opportunity. I wouldn't so much have the classes right in the agency’s building, but somewhere close to. Its way too easy for staff to head back to their work stations and do work if their in the same area. I also feel it makes it easier for people to take if the courses were offered as a whole, this way the employer doesn't get to uptight about the employee going leaving.
I don't know if local or statewide is better, and I am interested in more than 3 of the topics above, , ,I think good sources of info are important, but like electronic information becuase it is more environmentally sound - which is a big part of wellness.
I would like to see more workshops about fitness, diet, excersize, staying healthy, women's health issues, cancer awareness, heart awareness, etc. I would be very interested in going to something like that.
I would like to see workshops, intended for managers, that emphasize the importance to productivity and morale of creating an environment of emotional safety and support for people who report to them -- something that shows the tangible, bottom-line benefits of managing wholistically, humanely, and collaboratively instead of from the 'command and control' model ("The floggings will continue until morale improves.").
Perhaps something on working with people with developomental disabilities.
I think anything that you do to keep us more aware of health issues wither it be weight, self esteem, career advancement, things to watch for in our health that makes things change in our bodies, is wonderful.
I think it would be great to get women walking at lunch time. Could walking groups be coordinated somehow and get the word out? Some need the encouragement and others don't want to walk alone. Times and locations could be posted with maybe a few core walkers and little routes set up. Just a thought.
dna
I would loke more info for women in the construction trade
English as a second language classes
Info on vegetarian/vegan lifestyle would be beneficial considering the obesity and other health issues. Better health promotes better productivity, morale, etc.
Heart Health for women would be a great topic, possibly with opportunities for free or discounted health screening.
I still do not like the name ICSEW. It implies that it's a women-only club. I know you say it's open to men as well, but then maybe the name should be changed. Until then, I have little or no interest in things ICSEW-related or things sponsored by ICSEW. I think you'd be surprised by how any men in state employment feel as I do, but don't say anything.
I did not realize you have a newsletter.
Lunch hour activities-walking ( ex: poker walk)
Deal with more specific issues that affect workplace performance. (i.e. Diabetes and Cardiac Problems)
How about monthly peer-group meetings, where people can share best practices and discuss problems and experiences? I find these to be a huge help. I have a network of professional peers/friends and we find our stress is lower by networking and helping to solve professional problems. It's also a help to know there are others out there going through the same thing. It would take some peer-matching to get this going, but it would be well worth it!
Health care is always important how about Finances.
How to incorporate life skills into our work and home activities in manageable, meaningful ways that are achievable with changes. We all know the big changes, however small incremental changes that could be done with slight change here and there, or over time would be easier to accomplish and maintain then hugh changes that are not realistic or can't be maintained.
professional growth has been a real joke here at L&I .
Promoting recognition for staff who actively participate in health and wellness.
I want to use the recreation center on campus for free
weight loss suppoort group at facility
I would be more receptive to information and events promoting professional growth. I do not seek health and wellness info at work, it's not the place; it feels too personal for work. Also, this may be the opportunity I've been looking for to comment on past email postings from ICSEW regarding workshops. I've seen announcements for workshops and classes for women, with the caveat that ICSEW does not believe in 'reverse discrimination' and all are welcome. There are two things that are not okay with this. First, it has been show in numerous studies that all women versus co-ed learning environments often have dramatically different results regards to women's success. Research confirms that the structure of a single-sex program, particularly in fields that are ‘non-traditional’, women benefit in the long-term. A Harvard Graduate School of Education study in 1985 found that women become better students, are more confident in their abilities, hold more positive attitudes about their abilities, perceive themselves as being in control of their own choices, values and quality of life, and have overcome traditional sex-role stereotypes. Why is this 'reverse discrimination'? Second, the concept of 'reverse discrimination' is troubling. The term is thrown around far more loosely than is appropriate, particularly since I do not believe there is such a thing. In principle and practice, discrimination is about oppression. Oppression is a societal level issue, not an individual level. Oppression cannot occur unless someone is in a position of power. By holding a class, workshop, or training, one is not in a position of power. If your trainers could have positive or negative recourse over the professional advancement of participants this may be different, but no one is discriminating by holding a course to promote a supportive learning environment. ...my two cents
Mud wrestling
I think that an Outdoor Track of some kind would be helpful and used constantly for breaks. Here in the Yakima area, we have lots of land around our building. It would be safer for our employees than walking around town.
It would be nice if we got more info on ICSEW. I've worked for DSHS for 25 years and it seems like some sort of exclusive club that most of us have no idea how to access or get involved. We hear about conventions several months after they have taken place. Information rarely gets shared with line staff in DSHS about this organization. How do the DSHS representatives in ICSEW even hear about getting involved?
Workshops that will help me move from my current position in DSHS to another agency within State service and not have to take a pay cut. There are never any jobs within State service that I can get into because I don't have a bachelor's degree. It is very frustrating. I have taken some classes at UofW,Tacoma, which State paid for, but they only allow us to take 1 class at a time, so I can't get done and being 56 years old, I don't foresee a new career before I retire unless there is some other avenue I can pursue, like a training. I would like to underfill in a job and finish school to get social worker degree. They used to let employees do this.
I believe it is important to bring back the Wellness program, especially geared to women for stress reduction, exercise and better eating habits. It will increase productivity, decrease illness and encourage meeting production and quality with healthier and more alert employees.
wellness events at the worksite, DSHS co-sponsering health club payments, wellness incentives, (ie: games, prizes, competitions at the various offices)
I would like to see lunchtime or before/after classes such as yoga, tai-chi etc. I just think that Health & Wellness is so important, especially in our streessful jobs. Thank you for taking the time with this survey!
I would like to see some physical activities planned during the work day. It would also be very helpful to have more information on promotional opportunities w/in the state. I sometimes feel I have no other options than to remain a DSHS employee. Exploring other state agency opportunities would be great.
Aging work force specialities: physical fitness, fatigue, burn out, health problems that use up resources such as leave, money.
Health is an issue that effects all of us. Especially the clients that we serve. Knowledge helps us refer to providers who can help our clients succeed.
I would like to see more training addressing a variety of time and task management techniques or best practices designed to reduce stress in the face of the quantity of work we have and the pressure we are under to meet agency goals.
I'd like to see a position created for each Region for one person that is a liaison that employees can call to set up screening, Qand A sessions, referrals, resources, specialized trainings, etc that fit within this realm (such as the Employee Assistance Program, but geared towards health awareness and carreer advancement). I'd also like to see some required specialized training for all supervisor and admin positions regarding stress-related mental and physical illness (such as many of us suffer from working long hours at tough, stressful jobs, mostly without raises or any type of thanks, while constantly bombarded with more and more work and less resources and staff to do it all with).
I BELIEVE WELLNESS STARTS WITH HAVING A HEALTHY MENTAL STATE AS WELL AS PHYSICAL HEALTH, SO I WOULD LIKE EVENTS PROMOTING YOGA,VISUALIZATION,IMAGERY,ETC. TO LEARN HOW TO "CALM" YOUR BODY & THEN HAVE ON-SITE EVENT TO MEASURE YOUR BODY-FAT,BONE-DENSITY(MOST OF USE ARE "MIDDLE-AGE" NOW),ETC. & ALSO AN EVENT PROMOTING HEALTHY COOKING/EATING. I KNOW THIS IS ALOT BUT A HEALTHY PERSON IS SO MUCH MORE POSITIVE & PRODUCTIVE & LESS LIKELY TO BE ABSENT FROM WORK.
I would like to effectively learn how to interview for jobs outside the DSHS umbrella. I have other skills that I would like to utilize. I have applied for over 60 different jobs in the last 4 months and got little or no response on all jobs. This is more than discouraging.
Health and wellness should be part of the organizational culture, therefore it should be included into the workday. If it isn't included into the workday, then you will get less participation and results. Health and wellness is a good investment in staff and will improve quality, productivity, work environment, and eventually will save time/money. Pain management is a good topic to add. Also, midlife changes for both men and women is a good topic.
THE ENTIRE CONCEPT OF A "WOMEN'S" GROUP WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF A GOVERNMENT AGENCY IS EXCLUSIONARY AND BY IT'S VERY NATURE, DISCRIMINATORY. HOWEVER, EVEN WITHOUT THIS HIGHLY OFFENSIVE "US VS THEM" SPECIALIZATION, THE STATE OF WASHINGTON IS MY EMPLOYER, NOT MY PARENT. I'M A COMPETENT ADULT. THAT'S WHY THE STATE OF WASHINGTON HIRED ME. I DON'T NEED TO BE APPROACHED REGARDING INTIMATE PERSONAL ISSUES SUCH AS THE ONES YOU LIST VIA MY EMPLOYER. FOR GOODNESS SAKE, I HAVE ACCESS TO MY PERSONAL PHYSICIAN AND ENDLESS RESOURCES FOR THIS INFORMATION SHOULD I DETERMINE A NEED FOR SUCH. SO DOES EVERY OTHER STATE EMPLOYEE. STOP DUPLICATING READILY AVAILABLE RESOURCES. LEAVE US ALONE, MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS AND FIND A LESS INTRUSIVE, MORE VALUABLE WAY TO USE YOUR EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND STATE-PAID TIME.
I wish we had a lunchroom and an exercise area at work.
Since people now have to work longer for retirement and Social Security benefits. It would be nice to get some health and wellness activities, and actual testing for age related illness, such as High blood pressure, diabetes, heart attacks, strokes, and since we sit so much deep vein thrombosis or blood clots. I see many aging workers including myself.
stress management
Office yoga Stress management Office politics
There are so many overweight employees and I would like to see this problem addressed. There is also a lot of stress in people's lifes and many bring this to the workplace. These are not ideads, just concerns. Can your committee help with this?
access to on site wellness such as massage or pain management or diet support
Office wide yoga/exercise classes in the am/lunch, etc; Classes instructing people on the necessity for stretching and using their muscles frequently to prevent atrophy and encourage flexibility and overall good physical health. On- site massage offered by area massage schools.
Would like to see an area in the office with equipments such as treadmill, stationary bike for staff to use during their breaks or lunch hour. We spent most of our day time hours at work and alot of staff don't have time to go to the gym or could not afford one. It would help improve staff's physical and mental health if we can just exercise a few minutes a day or even release some of the pressure or stress we encounter everyday in our lives. " Healthy workers are more productive and saves the state dollars"
On-site fitness centers/exercise areas with private showers that can be used during lunch hours or before/after work. If this can't be done, then reduced rates for fitness centers with hours that accommodate our schedules. My husband and I are both obese, but we can't afford a fitness center, and don't have time available around our work schedules.
My area of interest is heart disease in women. Our local office participated in the Wear Red for Women day. It would be terrific if that could be emphasized statewide.
I would like to see employees be able to have say in what our health insurance will cover.
I would like to see EVERY facility use large conference or training rooms for lunch-time activities such as Tai-Chi or Yoga that promote stress relief and health without requiring a gym setting. I believe that the state should help organize such activities as part of wellness - healthier staff use less leave time. In an environment of higher stress and increased obesity, this would help me and others.
I am facing retirement in the next 10 years and it scares me. I hear from so many retired people who can't make it on SSA with the cost of housing and health care. How to plan ahead on little/no money would be a good topic.
Recent personal and family medical conditions have been made worse by medical community, which of course requires jumping through hoops to find resources and coverage. Finding that alternatives to all that are more effective. For example, foot massage for my neuropathy is far more valuable than all the tests six months ago and an appointment next month to check on its progression.
Its unfortunate that none of these health education activities are specifically geared to the other 50% of the workforce.
Improving family communications/relationships, saying no/delegating and/or recruiting help for projects at work/home, activities/diet that increase energy/relieve stress/improve emotional wellness.
yes - have a mental health day off
I would like to see classes or events scheduled for the north Seattle/Everett area.
HOPE newsletters/pamphlets for each office
Prostate health-related information and screening opportunities.
I wished as state employees we could get discounts to fitness places like Curves for women and local fitness places where there is no YMCA & I wish we could discounts for weight watchers and to state parks and other state facilites.
I would love it if our office could have a work-out room in which employees could exercise in before or after work, or on their lunch break. I have worked in an office where we had a room with good equipment, and it was used by almost all the employees.
*Discount for membership in health, gym, or wellness facilities *Discount for attending professional growth trainings, conferances Yolanda McGrann - CSO Administrator with Region 2 CSD
I really do feel that the State should do stress testing on the employees. The State used to do such things years ago (bio-feedback, bi-polar training, etc). I believe that in doing this, employees may better manage stress, thus relieving health issues & allowing employees to concentrate on jobs and possibly working towards promotions.
As a single parent, it is important that I be able to balance my personal life with work. Too often, it feels like I must sacrifice my personal life for work. What are effective ways to help agencies understand the trend in single-parenthood and adjust to their needs?
Most of the women that I work with are extremely stressed over work related issues. Sometimes, it's co-worker friction, or promotional growth issues, or they are overwhelmed by their workload. Stress can be dibilitating and detrimental to one's health. It would be nice if offices could offer a monthly or quarterly workshop for those who need help with stress relief.
In my particular office, a large percentage of the staff are suffering from depression and office morale is very low. I don't know if there would be anything that your agency could do to help with this - I would guess it would have to come from higher up within the agency.
WHEN I STARTED AS AN FSS3 THEY WERE DOING TRAININGS ON INTERVIEWING OR DEALING WITH THE IRATE CLIENT. THIS WAS DROPPED BEFORE I COULD ATTEND, I WOULD LIKE TO SEE TRAINING ON THIS ISSUE.
At LGC, I would love to have a room with some exercise equipment that could be used during lunch.
Sorry that I clicked on more than the three requested for each question.
would like halfday workshops not all day ones.
I have had breast cancer surgery recently. As we age this is becoming more common and coworkers we know have died. Suggest grief support info for staff and how to interact/respond to coworkers undergoing major treatment such as chemo, radiation, surgery, etc. as people have a tendance to avoid you or treat you like glass.
The single most difficult wellness issue in the offices I've worked in is the horrible food served at meetings, celebrations, post holiday garbage dumps, etc. Could address this in some major campaign effort?
1. Stress reduction classes, regular, onsite, after work. It needs to be a program designed by Region or Statewide (avoid onsite wellness group clickiness). 2. related to #1 - another way around this would be for HCA to offer a monthly benefit to help us (individually) with the cost of going to the YWCA or a swim club. ********THIS WOULD BE THE MOST HELPFUL !!!!!
I would like to see information/meetings teaching workers how and what to eat during the day to help keep energy flow going while also helping keep us from gaining weight. weight issues are huge with dshs employee's due to the high stress and low activity level of employee's during the work hours. Organized activities during lunch and break times might also help motivate people and help with self esteem, health, attendance and attitude.
Having lunch or dinner with a notable professional once a month.
Domestic Partnerships, Gay Issues
Yes please.
Better support/promotion of the Bike to Work Commute Trip Reduction month. (Sponsored by Cascade Bicyle Club & Group Health, among others.) More on career advancement as well as stress reduction and surviving stress related to RIF and tight budget.
In another office I worked in, we had a "Wellness Committee" in which employees were able to participate--we encouuraged each other in wellness activities--ie--walking at lunch, etc...this worked very well--I would like to see management support these activities for employees.
Yes I would definately like to see some health and wellness activities, there is a weight gain associated with sitting at a desk all day and I'd like to see some Yoga or Pilates offered at lunch break to get people away from their desks.
yes i would. classes on diabeties, different diet receips for some of the different diets chair excieces for people who can not go walking
Yes, I would like to see workshops during work hours to teach and inform better health and wellness in the workplace.
I would really like to see some support on addressing peri-menopause or post menopausal changes and how this affects women in their jobs.
I'd like to know what might be available in the near future in health and wellness and ongoing health insurance as I approach the years before retirement.
To facilitate better physical conditioning, I would appreciate being able to combine a lunch period with a break, at least twice weekly, so that it's possible to participate in an exercise class near work or simply go on a healthful walk. Too much, I find it easier to stay in the office rather than leave it. By the end of the day, I'm mentally exhausted but not physically used. Consequently, the state of health is becoming more in arears (literally) - sorry for the pun! Any ideas are welcomed!
I believe a healthy employee contributes to a healthy work environment. It would be nice to see more emphasis on healthy living. Excercise would be a great example. To give employee's an option for discounts at gym's or better yet..if there was a central gym on campus for employees to use during lunch or stress breaks. It is important to follow through with the emphasis and encourage employees to utilize the discount/equipment. Provide motivational techniques etc...
I see that a lot of times these things are talked about but not actually worked on in individual agencies. It would be nice to see them followed through.
I am not aware of what you offer right now. I know we had an ergonomics training a few years ago.
L AND I INFORMATION TO WHAT HELTH ISSUES ARE WORKRELATED
Flu shots on site or other routine screenings like cholesterol screening.
I have been with the state for 13+ years; have been in some positions that required First Aid certification and some others that didn't. On both a personal and professional level, I feel this information would be useful. Training made available locally and during work hours (even with a nominal fee) would be much appreciated.
Yes
I would Love a local support group for eating disorders, nutrition, exercise, cooking and general "team" building - like a Dr. Phil group - with soime counseling, but esp. long term support!!! And - a list of local doctors & specialists who are Interested in working with people who are obese (not just surgery) who are positive and Not condescending!!
I would love to have access to a health & wellness website w/links but it would need to made clear to management that it was okay to access it! I would be so grateful to be able to sit w/someone that could help me figure out what other state positions would allow me to best utilize my knowledge & abilities and promote up or out!!
Mentoring, workshops.
An event that includes fitness, nutrition and alternative vendors (ie.massage; chiropractic; accupunture; aromatherapy;reflexology etc.)and reduced or trail memberships or services,& samples available.
I believe health and wellness in the workplace is a topic that would have ample rewards for all people. I am not sure what you questions above refer too..... (competitions or games? I checked because it sounded like hands on stuff) Currently I am teaching an ergonomics class to state office workers... (right now with DDDS and MASCS). I share info about boosting immune system, efficient breathing as well as informing staff how to counter the sedentary office position. We are attempting to get this program accepted by all State Agencies...
I am currently employed with DSHS in the Region 5 Callcenter but have been a Human Resource Specialist prior to this job. I am on the state wide register for Human Resource Job Opportunities but never get any interviews. I am very interested in Human Resources but do not know how to be considered for those jobs. Any suggestions?

Work placewellness and positive communication skills to help people enhance their effectiveness and not get locked into the negative converstations that bring us all down... solution focused conversatioins that empower people to make a difference.
Need information on how to get along with a diverse population of residents/co-workers/managers with a lesser amount of stress and a greater amount of input.
Topic specific speakers on subjects, for example: sleep apnea, hip & knee problems, etc.
I think skateboarding classes would be very beneficial especially for the post-menopausal ladies.
Both. But, I would like something that gives me ideas on what to do when all the sudden you are so tired (at your desk) that you feel stressed to the max. Things like that or other health and wellness activities.
I believe the Intranet would be the best way to reach the most people. I like the idea of sending out a monthly newsletter or article. As a Human Resource person, I could sign up for a listserver and the e-mail would automatically be distributed to me; then I could distribute it to my employees in the agency. I do this for The FrontLine Employee (the newsletter from the Employee Advisory Service). Or you could just distribute the newsletter to DSHS statewide - if possible. That would be better yet.
WE USED TO BE ABLE TO ATTEND ICSEW CONFERENCE YEARLY BUT FOR LONG TIME WE HERE ARE NOT ALLOWED TO ATTEND WOULD LIKE BE ABLE TO ATTEND SUCH.
Having an on site exercise place that I can go to on lunch. It is difficult to walk during the rainy times.
Insurance options that provide better access to alternative health options and prevention. Invite on site demonstrators for options like yoga, tai-chi, etc. to feed into informal break or lunch time groups.
Not at this time.
I would like to find out what kind of medical there is for someone who is on the verge of retiring. This needs to be made better known to the workforce.
I would like Upper Management to be supportive when we talk about any health and wellnes activities. Create a committee in each office to promote wellness.
Help on quiting smoking
I'm disappointed that there are no activities or issues specifically for men. "We allow our ignorance to prevail upon us and make us think we can survive alone, alone in patches, alone in groups, alone in races, even alone in genders." - Maya Angelou By having a purpose to: "enhance working conditions for state employed women. This is accomplished through advising the Governor on policies that affect state employed women and providing information and education to state employed women." With no consideration of the interrelation and interdependence with male counterparts, isn't the ICSEW, as Ms. Angelou so eloquently put it "allowing thier ignorance to previal upon them and make them think they can survive alone"? I would think that a group that champions issues such as pay equity would practice the same equity in advocating for the issues of men, in order to be taken seriously. Isn't it hypocracy to demand equity for one group and simultaneously refuse to give platform to the issues affecting the other group? I would think the ICSEW would want to practice what they preach...
Ways to "de-stress," or how better handle stress and/or anxiety.
Send notice each time new issue of InterAct is available.
having a nutritional lunch with the boss in the office or out of the office once a month. A time to share at the lunch table.
Yes, teamwork, office politics, social interaction, authenticity, honesty, communication.
Sure, but how & when? Time is a major issue. Any reading materials needs to brief or laid out so one can stop reading and come back to it
I had no idea ICSEW provided health and wellness information. I've worked for the state for years and always thought it was only an organization for women who were highly motivated to advance their career, but never knew anyone who belonged to it. As a long-time (25+years) woman state employee I've never received any literature on ICSEW and only in the past months have I seen several training opportunities passed on to where I work, and I think that's because a member now works here. More advertisement is needed to attract prospective members and inform them what the organization is about. I was able to send 4 support staff to the recent conference and they loved it! I'm very interested in the health and wellness activities that will support the "Wellness" objective in the Sustainability Plan required by Governor Executive Order.
Yes, mentoring trng, one on one or in a group setting. Wellness room available for all staff.
I would like to see you take a leading role instituting the use of safe carpet cleaning products within the workplace. With all the talk about wellness and the Gov's EO on sustainability, we should be walking the talk in the workplace vs. using cleaning products that impair the health of employees subjected to them, long afterward.
Do an American Indian Conference local or statewide.
How about a shower facility so folks could work out before work or during their lunch hour???
how we will get ahead once 07/2005 is here with all the changes in personnel/ hiring ect.
organize different exercise levels of bicycling fun tours
To promote employee wellness offer employees who practice wellness activities reduced health care covereage or pay for gym premiums.
Health and wellness and getting the most support out of our state health insurance benefits to support our families.
Yes I would like to see more of this for your workers. It would help promote growth for those that are so busy with life and the jobs we already are trying to juggle. It would help with office moral as the employes would feel valued. Thanks for asking.
Modern Day Stress and how it affects us in our daily lives at work and home.
Promote wellness walking to releave stress not only through brochures and newspaper, but also DVD or presentations. The main focus being the possitive affects walking or other excercise has on thinking and overall health. Also focus on nutrition. I am having a hard time deciding what to eat. I am alergic to milk products and wheat.
I think state agencies should reinvest in Wellness programs for employees, including the designation of Wellness coordinators, dedication of resources and attention to preventive measures in the workplace with as much emphasis on creating HEALTHY workplace environments as is put on preventing or correcting unhealthy/hostile environments. Allowance for flexible schedules should be the norm. "Well leave" should be considered as appropriate a use of time as "sick leave" when indicated - a mental health day here and there is amazingly refreshing! In stressful environments, it makes a significant difference.
work towards having employers provide employee lounges, with couches, or other comfortable seating, a library of donated books, maybe a TV or exercize equipment.
I think that exercise, fitness and diet are of special concern for women. I have seen many women I work with gain quite a bit of weight in the past 5 years. I expect that some of this is due to continuing responsibilities at home even though they work full time. I'm sure this makes it difficult to find time to exercise. I would really like to see more exercise opportunities available in conjunction with work - such as on-site gyms. Also, more peer support for healthy eating and exercise.
Active for Life Programs
So many times I have traveled around the state and see many areas that have great h&w programs and then I come back to my area and there is nothing. I would like to see a little more effort put into the project on the East side of the mountains.
Preparing for occupational changes Preparing for a second career or avocation after retirement
I believe if we make work fun it can be very enriching for all the people involved. I am a brand new employee and the office seems pretty healthy. I adhere to the Fish philosophy. there is a book about Seattles famous fish market that truely imporved my outlook on work!
Something that includes exercise, especially for those that sit from 8-5!
I would like specific training on Vicarious trauma and Compassion Fatigue directed at the Social service providers.
How to achieve workplace advancement while struggling as a single parent
Physical Activity during lunch, breaks.
My rights as a state worker? I think that would lower my stress if I fully understood how much I have to take at work before I say "Stop it. That's unprofessional and I don't have to be treated that way."
Since you only care about a select subgroup of state employees (i.e., those without the "criminal" Y chromosone), why don't you keep these mailings to members of your exclusive club?
I would like to see more emphasis on job satisfaction rather than climbing the ladder. Success is not determined by income or job position unless that is the individuals goal. Job satisfaction is the greatest factor in determing success. I am a male. I have climed the ladder and achieved a lofty civil service position. However I was more satisfied doing work in a lower classification. Am I successful? In securing income - yes. In personal satisfaction - no.
Clearly summarized information on family leave issues - what is the current law, what is in the legislature this year, etc.
I am in a quandary about this. We live on the East side of the state where there is little availibility of activities such as this. Our management is not in favor of things of this nature, or that is the impression that I have. I would like to see for the older employees some advancement opportunity, but there is none, especially in the agricultural fields. I would very much like to see some cross training done between forestry, agriculture, timber sales, aquatics, etc. It would be benificial and educational if when workload in the forestry section were low that they could segway into helping the ag and vice versa. That would be great cross training and allow better communication, understanding and professional growth in knowledge of the agency.
My colleagues and I would like DNR to get massagers in the building, like L & I has, for mini, stress-reducing massages. The agency needn't select one particular company or freelance person, but could rotate the people they use, to provide someone each day, 9-4pm...maybe for 2-4 hour slots.
How getting along in the workplace can improve your health.
Yes, I am a strong believer in being healthy and well, but couldn't tell ya how to any other ways to do it. I think you guys do a good job of getting information out to us.
I think that have a work out area in each government building or one near by that employees can access would be great.
Health risks and emotional trauma caused by abortion needs to be addressed at a large scale level. Women need to know what the real effects are.
Build a cadre or database of women willing to mentor up young-in-state-government women (not age, but time in service). Promote this through executive management in various (all?) agencies. At times, highlight women working in non-traditional employment or position that have gone from non-trad to neutral. Many women take a job because "it was open and I applied" - address how to go from unskilled to developing OJT skills and documenting for advancement (when you don't have formal education, how do you skill successfully compete for positions you have expertise).
Lunchtime exercise groups.
Emails with Websites would be good, and/or publications sent to individual work stations.
How to successfully cope with the extra pressures on the job brought on by being a minority in a historically all white male (closed) profession.
Hello to Jan~ You're to be congratulated for such a professional survey. I'm glad ICSEW has solicited ideas and feedback from state employees. I look forward to seeing the results, and hope I can participate in whatever informational material or events that you sponsor. Keep up the good work~ Respectfully, Ginny Ith
stress management seminar (like that at CORE training) team building/morale boosting conferences or meetings
In DSHS social workers have very few opportunities for growth. It would be helpful to everyone if the knowledge and expertise of longtime employees was utilized. Managers appear threatened by staff knowledge.
I would like to hear people on management level describe their career journey. What quality do you need most to achieve your goals?
Maybe a support person (s) we could contact if we need help or encouragement in weight loss, fitness, mental exercises, or physical exercises.
Lunch time activities, informational tables in the cafeteria.
I remember way back when, that we had a representative for our office and that there were organized informational meetings on health and wellness. It was a treat. I think it was during work time, but it could be during lunch.
Since heart disease is such a major women's health issue, I would really like to see this area stressed (sorry). Also, is there a way for retirees to participate in health/wellness activities? That would be GREAT!
I WOULD LOVE TO SEE MORE ACTIVITIES/INFORMATION REGARDING STATE EMPLOYEES HEALTH AND WELLNESS I DID NOT EVEN KNOW THAT A COMMITTEE LIKE THIS WAS AVAILABLE AS A RESOURCE. I STRONGLY FEEL THAT WOMEN AND MEN IN THE LINE OF WORK THAT WE DO NEED MORE SUPPORT THAN WHAT WE CURRENTLY GET REGARDING OUR PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH.
Childbirth, maternity leave, and returning to work after childbirth.
The list you provided is very comprehensive, I would like to see partnering with other organizations/events. Ex: this week is national Public Health Week and there was a walk around Capitol Lake yesterday, ICSEW could have been a co-sponsor.
Fitness programs encouraged at offices - walking partnerships, lunchtime meetings on healthy lifestyles, etc.
Health club memberships.
Statewide wellness challenges.
ABSOLUTELY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I AM VERY INTERESTED IN HEALTH AND WELLNESS. I AM ESPECIALLY INTERESTED IN PROFESSIONAL GROWTH AND PROMOTION.
more emphasis on working out and taking care of ourselves physically and emotionally. Also, emphasis on talking about the issues about working for this agency that impact our work, which impacts our mental and physical health
I am on the point of retiring and find that presently I really do not have the need to participate. My responses relate in my observations of what would be valuable to the employees (veterans and rookies) that would enhance their professional growth and health.
Yes. I would like to see more information or class sessions on job promotions within the State, other extended learning opportunities or volunteer programs to help us reach this goal of a promotion, the benefits of flex-hours, and stress management.
Information and perhaps special discounts for facilities that offer hot tubs, massage and overall wellness for women. More information on staying well at the office. How to negotiate an outdoor area for a break that's smoke free..safe walking paths at lunch...how to protect yourself from your coworkers sickness. How to deal with the controlled climate in offices...is there a way our bodies can stay healthy and we can be comfortable at work in summer when the cool air blasts away? Negotiate with PEBB health care providers that offer more alternative options.
CLASS ONCE A MONTH.
Daycare...more security, background checks and more flexibility for single parents. parking lots and adequate lighting for security. basic self-defense
I would like to see activities that will help to change the culture of our workplace to one that recognizes that healthly habits in the workplace result in productive workers and happy people. Management in general does not promote health in the workplace - good nutrition at lunch, stress reducers during the day such as exercise, instruction on keeping focus and priortizing, and emphasis on humor.
I'd like to see the health/wellness activities and special events for my wife and I. I'm 57, so my personal professional growth has probably peaked.
Yes.
I would like to see fitness classes offered at lunch hours such things as yoga, weight management, et.
We would like to have a wellness event in our office, can you help with that? If so, I am at weltosj@dshs.wa.gov
a huge topic right now is gang related violence. It affects not only the victims, but the gang members and families of members/victims as well. Entire neighborhoods, cities/towns can be affected and should be aware of the signs to look for that are related to gangs. Many families do not know their kids are involved in gangs and being aware of the signs and what they mean, could help tremendously.
Wow, I think what you already have listed are great ideas. You've covered most of it. As I went through the list, my biggest concern was how to make time for more in an already full worklife. So, how 'bout a session on how to advocate for yourself when positions are "eliminated" and the job duties are added to people who already supposedly had full time jobs and nothing is taken away. (I know part of it is coping with change, part of it is taking care of ourselves, but there is another part of it that has to do with advocacy and the fact that almost no positions are cut because the work wasn't needed or because the person in it wasn't working.) People are expected to do more and more, no job training exists in our agency, so we see so much minimal performance because people don't have the time or the skill to carry out the added duties and responsibilities. Thanks.
interested in professional growth in directions that fit an over 50 worker.
Smoking seems to be an issue to a lot of staff in this office (although I'm a non-smoker). Professional growth is of interest.
There are so many things going on for people who are already in good shape. What is needed, by myself and many others in our building, is wellness activities (exercise programs, or classes) geared for those who are not physically fit. I have arthritis in my spin and asthma, please am very over weight beacuse I can not longer do those things I used to do. I would love a program geared for helping me to keep the mobility I have, and maybe gain more. Something like Sit and Be Fit, or along those lines.
One idea I had was to have the Weight Watchers at our office at lunch, but management stated that they did not want outside agencies using our conference rooms. We had several people interested.
support groups
would it be possible for you to facilitate getting State permission to use office site for wellness activities, e.g., weight watcher meetings either during lunch hour or after work or things like a yoga/pilates class, nutrition class, etc
Support and counceling for Career Change Options for training for career change
Teach Current Resume' styles, how to interview for Federal jobs verses state jobs, honest roll play and feedback in a contructive mannor, time to research job opportunities while on the job, Classes to teach supervisors how to write an effective letter of referrance, classes to encourage supervisors to conduct letter of recommendations for their employees, teach supervisors how to recognize outstanding employees and not play favorites due to length of friendships or pressure to promote from others. Encourage and empower women to look like women, behave like women and give the opportunity to promote into higher positions. Teach acceptance of different cultures and not to judge on a womens looks........there is an enormase bias to women who are thin and attractive, especially in the DDD field. We are talked about, judged unfairly, not respected or taken seriously and rarely given the opportunity to promote even though our job performance and evaluations are excellent. Commpassion and sensitivity need to be tought, together with professionalism. (Please excuse typo errors. I am unable to use Spell-check with this program)
It would be beneficial if state office could have an on-site gym to help keep physically fit and to help reduce stress.
Have none, this survey has covered all of them.
I would like to see more part-time positions available for working parents with school aged children so the parents can be actively involved with their children and still maintain a sense of productivity as an individual in the workforce.
I was a Washington Wellness Coordinator for many years - it was a highly successful program. Is there any chance that this would be funded again for State employees?
Help with improving interpersonal relations while working under stressfull situations. How to balance work and personal life and the importance of self-nurturing. How to limit work to the workday hours when the load increases.
An inspection of all employees work stations by L & I staff, especially call center environment. Positions which employees are stationary for long periods of time.
Dealing with Alcohol and Drug addicted employees in the workplace. I do not want to put them on the street, I want to help them.
I notice on our March/April newsletter you had march classes listed, but nothing for the month of april, in order for us to take the classes and or activities we would need at least a months in advance notice, even if it is after hours, since we are all busy on our jobs and our personal lives. So yes more career and health classes and activities. I think it will benefit us as an agency if we did work outside of the DOL box, for our health and wellness activities for personal and professional growth. There is so much knowledge/information out there for all of us. Then in the end what we learn we can share with our co-workers to help them grow too. It is all about team playing right.
Yes, I would like to see helpful information that can be put into practice easily. We are so busy during the day that easy, small steps we could take toward wellness would not only increase our learning but also help promote wellness in the workplace and at home.
Some classes on mens' health issues!
I don't know how much research may have already gone into the health and wellness effort, but I would anticipate that with increased productivity and longevity (less turnover) the state might be able to justify spending a sizeable amount for a workout facility, for example, to enhance employee wellness.
At one time during lunch, some of our staff brought in a aerobics instructor and for 40 to 45 minutes had a complete workout. She charged $20 for each session and as less people became interested the more it would cost per person. It would be nice to see support for this type of activity, to promote health, energy, people would use less sick leave and be energized for the 2nd half of their work schedule. Just a thought
On-site fitness classes. On-site motivational speakers. Work-site library with ability to "check out" books regarding careers, managment skills, etc. Discounts and/or financial incentives for healthier lifestyle, such as for joining and attending fitness centers, quitting smoking, weight loss.
ACTIVITIES THAT WE CAN DO DURING OUR WORK HOURS TO PROMOTE WELLNESS AT WORK. MOST OF US FORGET TO GET UP AND MOVE AROUND DURING THE DAY. I READ OF AN OFFICE (PROBABLY NOT A STATE OFFICE) THAT SENT E MAIL ALERTS TO ITS STAFF TO REMIND THEM TO STRETCH AND MOVE SEVERAL TIMES DURING THE DAY. ALSO HELPFUL WOULD BE INFORMATION ON ALTERNATE HELATH IDEAS...MASSAGE, YOGA, ETC....
I am currently a senior at the Evergreen State College Tacoma Campus. I will be graduating next winter quarter with my BA in Liberal Arts. I would very interested in any internship opportunities in the area of health and wellness that might arise during this summer or next fall quarters. I feel that by providing students with internships in these crucial areas it can serve a dual purpose of providing for professional growth and helping to gain new perspectives for further health and wellness activities for state employees. Thank you.
What do you mean by "local" vs. "statewide?" Does statewide mean offered in one place that we would have to travel to? It might make a difference whether ICSEW had a fund available to pay travel costs. I checked local because I didn't understand the implications of checking "statewide."
One of my biggest challenges I face now is how to deal with the stress of a very large, demanding caseload, the managers' focus only on any errors made while totally neglecting positive comments or recognitions of efforts made by staff to learn and apply the new, complex assessment tool,
As an employee from the East side of the State, I have experienced the inequity of options offered to the West side, (Olympia specifically) because most offices cannot (and should not) traipse over there to participate in an hour long function. If there are programs set up, it should be something set up, and available to all areas of the state. From Everett to Vancouver and Forks to Spokane. We are all a part of Washington State government and appreciate the acknowledgement that more exists outside of Olympia. Whatever is done, please do not waste state resources by sending out more "brochures" I have seen more of these just dumped into the garbage than read. Thank you
I would like to see that happen in our office
I would have to think about it for awhile and then come up with some answers, suggestions.
I have no interest in any training programs or meetings
There are no state sponsered activities for employee wellness, and no emphasis on it by the State of Washington. In fact, prior to sending out an email to promote a health activity in the office, we are supposed to send a request for apporival to do that up through the chain of command. In years past, there was at least a state wellness coordinator. When I've written up the laine to request support for wellness activity, the only suggestion I got was to contact a man who used to be involved in those activities, but now works for another state agency. He never responded to my phone calls or emails. There is a high degreee of illness in our agency-due to stress and unhealthy life styles. This has to be more expensive for the state than institutuin a wellness program.
If state employees would be able to get discount to use health facilities it would be great.
I live in a small community with in an hour drive of a major university. The university campus is not a good place for training. It is difficult to navigate through the campus area, and parking is difficult. There is a local community college where it is much easier to get to classes. So, if classess are offered outside of a DSHS office, then I would prefer a smaller college campus setting. I feel training should be offered outside of the office setting (at the local community college, or at the library), so it can be done in a more relaxed atmosphere, and without interruption. On-line interactive training is good- as it can be done at work, but many people do not have time in their day to fit extra training into their work schedule. Centralized training with my work unit at a region office, usually requires long distance travel for me, and that is difficult. Periodic communication from the DSHS secretary, or her staff, that encourages participation would be good. The division of the agency I work in has good management. Managers in some divisions need to be trained to accomodate their workers in managing stress, and not be contributing to the stress levels. So, I would encourage mandatory training for managers who can then promote both mental and physical well being among their workers (both by their words and actions). Some issues that can be addressed: dealing with stress (not just time management), promote self esteem of individuals and teach the value of the services that we provide. Often we hear only negative, critical information from the media and legislators. It would be good to get encouraging quotes, or short articles of encouragement from our agency management, from our governor (and she has been good so far on this), and from our legislators. We have a new, local waterpark. It would be good if we could get discounted entry fees so we could make better use of the facility. We do not have a swimming pool at our local high school, so our water park is the only indoor pool available. I think it could be good if coordinated efforts could be made in each community- to gather state employee's, teachers, and other public employees (and their families)- to meet at local high school tracks, gymnasiums, or parks- so they can walk together- visit, play basketball, tennis, swim, etc.
It would be wonderful to see more opportunities for or information about job-sharing, telecommuting, or other family-friendly alternatives which would allow mothers to be productive, advancing employees while being more available to nurture and parent our children.
Social Workers for DCFS are required to attend Training Academy. I think it would be a good idea for there to be another mandatory kind of training on personal health/wellness/stress management for at least a couple of days after one has been employed for about 5 years. You really need it by then if you plan to work for the department in a long term manner. Maybe a refresher every 5 years thereafter for a day.
Forums for people to discuss things that work for them, instead of discussing what is not working. Giving employees a more accessbile, encouraging way of contributing to change and making our jobs more effective and fulfilling. A lot of workshops are so cookie cutter. I've been through a million of them - powerpoints, break-out groups, etc. Smaller, less formal activities are fulfilling and motivating. I would be interested in working on this.
I am not sure.
Would like to know what other agencies are doing and how they manage.
A work out room at the office as well as a quiet room where you can rest for a minute if you are not feeling well or need to take a small break.
Owing to the number of dept changes in a very short amount of time and severe budget cuts, there is much stress in the workplace, especially amoungst the people in high stress jobs like child protection/child welfare. Stress reduction work would be very helpful. There is also a growing number of obese employees and this is an alarming development over the years. Weight control, weight loss, etc. (healthy choices in eating, etc.) would be excellent. Tai chi, alternative health preventions would also be a welcome answer to employee wellness. Finally, work out rooms with safe equipment, open before and after work, for breaks, etc. would be another good move towards state employee health.
People are always eating on the run or grabbing fast food and making unhealthy choices. Cooperative lunches in buildings that do not have cafeteria facilities would be a good start.
One of the big things that I see that would help with 'work place wellness' would be for the expectations to be realistic and 'doable'. My agency's (Children's administration) expectation of social workers is simply not 'doable' which creates an atmosphere of anxiety, stress, and punishment. This would go a long way in promoting 'health and wellness'.
Many years ago we used to have Wellness Games. A little bit of friendly competition got everybody involved in physical activities, everybody felt better and productivity went up.
I would love to see DSHS really get involved in employee wellness, such promoting fitness at the work site, ie: classes, speakers, discounts to health facilities, on-site wellness centers/rooms. Employee fitness equals less time off due to illness equals better and happier employees
Instructions for employees to have better boundaries re taking work home, and not working excessive hours. Support by management to limit workers "donating" hours to get an impossible job done. Reimbursing workers for actual time worked= better morale=happier employees=less burnout and use of sick leave= increased worker retention.
I am very interested in health screenings: diabetes, blood pressure, heart. I see these offered in the community but usually during work hours. Would be nice to have some for DSHS staff at times and locations that we can attend.
Yes, please see if state government can get better membership rates at gyms and exercise clubs across the state. The "Y" is not a fun or inspiring place to workout or get physical activity.
Personally I use Alternative medicine and am very interested in wholistic practice utlizing naturopathic physicians, chiropractic care, etc. Anything under these topics as well as natural foods, etc. would be of interest to me personally. Thank you. Encouraging and enabling more physical activity on the job would be good long=term for employees. We sit far too much in one position in front of our computers.
I HAVE BEEN WITH THE STATE FOR 11 YEARS, AND I WOULD LIKE TO BE PROMOTED. I THINK THAT YOU SHOULD HELP AS BE PROMOTED. THANK YOU
Effectively working with adults and families with differing value systems
Don't tell us or people make up excses not to attendd. Brown bag lunch is great, many bring their lunches. I bet you would be surprised.
Yoga for Self Care
YES
Last year's Active for Life activity was beneficial not only because it placed an emphasis upong healthy activity but because it fostered comeraderie among co-workers. I think having access to on site massage is very beneficial. I think other health and wellness services available onsite at group discounts would be enermously helpful and ultimately cost-effective for the state. A "paid" workshop on ergonomics or stress management may cost up front but may save money on sick days in the long run.
ON-LINE BULLETIN BOARD - DISCUSSION BOARD - ANYONE CON POST COMMENTS/INFO
Something about creatively marketing skill sets with an eye to future employment. How to be able to be involved with mentoring when a division discourages it (our agency has a good program set up...one of the great surprises when I first came here; although it started in our division, our division no longer supports it.) How to get support for training/professional development in times of budget cuts. Development of career change support groups. How to find inexpensive career development/career change resources with DOP's career services so severely cut in terms of counselors and classes. I think that anything related to coping with stress and changes that are imposed is EXCELLENT (still am learning about this)! :-) (I used to be much more aware of ICSEW events and information at L&I...at DSHS, I don't know about much...for the first couple of years, I tried to get hooked up and never could...including with the newsletter.) I'm not sure how supported ICSEW is at DSHS.
It would be great to have on sight support such as weight watchers and also a employee discount with a local health club as our "wellness room" that had workout equipment is now a work room. An onsight gym for CDS would be great since DCFS has one already.
Yes! Check out what Thurston County Health Dept. is doing. Also Providence Health system for employees, to promote health. Appreciate having persons identified to contact. Follow-up will be important, tho', in order to not motivate then destroy hopes of improvement.
RE: Professional Growth - Leadership Development Opportunities - Intra state career fairs for staff to meet and talk to hiring authorities from other state agencies....or something like.
Yes, especially professional growth.
As a very unrecognized minority among the women you represent, I am transgendered and do notice very little effort to integrate anything to make me or any other person from the GLBT community who are also state workers into any of these areas. I feel I am not even welcome to attend much less participate.
Access to gyms culture change that encourages taking breaks/lunches quicker response to basic ergonomic needs. Most think it's a joke. I received a desk after 4 doctor's statements and three years waiting that has made a significant + positive difference. I understand that it was a "mistake" that it was ordered and that the state was only obligated to review the situation not do anything about it! (True or not? I don't know!) Anyhow, I'm happy and hopefully healthier.
Dear ICSEW, I'm not a woman, but I'm in a long-term relationship with one who has no access to these resources in her private-sector job. (Do you know anyone looking for an extremely skilled graphic designer who's currently taking advanced courses at TESC to learn web site design using XHTML?) Since I'm probably not the only member of this demographic group, I think it would be a wonderful thing if ICSEW classes, activities and events (especially those held after normal work hours) were also open to spouses and domestic associates of state employees. My selections in #1 above are, in fact, based on my knowledge of her current interests and needs. Thanks. (zami300@dshs.wa.gov)
Meditation workshops? Resume writing Presentation skills Effective communication Reaching consensus Decisionmaking skills How to do a cost/benefit analysis
Yes...Please offer classes or trainings that provide CEU's for us professionals that must maintain our credentials
I think that special fairs and trainings can be fun as well as informative to help provide more resources regarding learning more about health and wellness. I also think that it would be helpful if employers could help offset the cost of gym memberships and this would encourage more people to exercise.
I don't know how but state employees qualify for lower rates on their auto, home, etc.. insurance through Liberty Mutual (I beleive, correct me if I'm wrong). Why not use the same leverage in acquiring "Health & Wellness" memberships through local fitness clubs etc???
Have yearly Check-ups for blood pressure, and other minor health issues avialible to everyone who works at each office. These could be done but students taking medical courses at the local college's and hospital staff. We could use our community resources to obtain the verification of what illiness/flu seasons were coming up to take preventitive steps to keep us at work with out the illiness. We could also talk about if you are ill you should not be coming to work to share with others, you should be taking care of yourself first then the others that are needing services from you.
interpersonal relationships or how to deal with micromanagers
I have been so overwhelmed with the work I do in Child Protection Services, I have not been able to take advantage of the trainings or educational opportunitites that have been available.
Yes, no specific suggestions at this time. I do feel it is particularly relevant with the additional stresses of the upcoming personnel reforms.
managing stress and conflict in the workplace - related to co workers and Supervisors.
Educate staff how we can help co-workers who are using drugs or alcohol.
Preventative health workshops (traditional & alternative medicine)--before we get a desease--things we can put into practice now before permanent damage is found out.
complimentary medicine that affects the geriatric population
I would be very interested in the provision of information and workshops on how to get promoted and where a person can go in the hierarchy at Children's Administration. After about 15 years of service, it does not seem as if there are opportunities or direction on how to make and/or take advantage of an opportunity that might arise. If longevity with our state agencies is desired, then there should be a benefit to those of us who have been here through many administrators and administrations other than plugging along as before. Morale takes a beating every time some "outsider" gets the big promotions or the lead positions while those who have been here for decades need to move outside our agency to be recognized. It's demoralizing to see our Secretary's stay only long enough to get their pension and move on without having any history of our agency.
Health Fair
I would like to see some activities, such as seminars, brown bag lunces, etc., which introduce EAS staff to DSHS employees. They have great expertise in their staff, and there is a lot of resistance within DSHS to deal with personal issues such as addiction and domestic violence.
daily tips on health or health statistics and/or daily "did you know" humor....today's chuckle, kids say the darndest things, or some such thing monthly vegetable stat....a carrot has so many carbs, provides _______vitamins,______minerals, then after the vegees stats, do the same with fruit monthly exercise stats.....walking a mile a day does________ for you. yardwork does________for you(bending/stretching/reaching/lifting)
Establish a designated person at job site who is a liason for your group. Responsibilities: resource person for paper information from your group, referrals, etc. Also plan monthly brown bag discussion group, etc. Also make ICSEW more visible to us (I have never heard of ICSEW until today!)
Incentives to participate in fitness activities during a work day. As a previous employee for the State of Utah, we had the opportunity to sign fitness contracts with our immediate supervisors. The contract allowed an extra 1/2 hour 3 days a week to use along with our lunch time to participate in a physical fitness activity. Examples of activity, gym workout, jogging or brisk walking, etc.,
organizational skills/managing heavy workload stress management safety when working in community and entering client's homes
More (key words-administrative approved/sanctioned) small local agency involvement. Professional growth learning opportunities offered to all, not a select few.
It is really important to me that the ICSEW information be geared towards all state employees, not just those in Olympia. I would like to see events held around the state so that more of us could participate.
More leadership classes for all levels of employees. We have a crisis in leadership, or the lack of. Supervisors, managers, deputy directors and even some directors lack the necessary skills to lead people effectively. Effective leadership and communication can lead to or cut back the eliminating stress management courses, depression and anxiety issues, etc. There is a very low trust culture across the board in state government, in order to be more effective at serving clients we first had to get it right internally. Not getting it right "at home" (work)first, hurts clients and employees as well.
Information sharing that allows interaction/Q&A sessions work for me because if allow me opportunities to communiate, listen, retain and perhaps use the info gained; gained thru classeroom participation or workshops held locally during the weekday or weekend.
Information/instruction/ or even a workshop on how to protect yourself, as an individual, in a bureaucracy. This topic speaks to survival, stress management, workplace wellness and a number of other related issues. In this Agency it is too easy to treat employees, who have promoted beyond the level of Union "protection", unfairly and unequitably. The system allows administrators(starting at the regional level), who are not always as qualified, professional, balanced, or ethical as you'd like to think, a level of autonomy and subjectivity that allows them to make arbitrary decisions that can, and do, seriously damage the careers and lives of other employees, with little or no Agency over-site. The general perception in the field is that, in these situations, there is no real recourse within the Agency, because (if it gets that far) the primary role of personnel and the AGO is to defend and protect the highest manager in the "food chain". The results?...Unnecessary loss of valuable human resources, diminished productivity, and/or lawsuits originated outside the system. An Agency this size has to delegate certain responsibilities, but there should always be adequate checks and balances to assure fair and equitable treatment of all its staff. (WMS)Employees need to know what, if any, real recourse there is inside the system for addressing and resolving problems and disputes at this level. Employees have a right to be informed of how to protect themselves as individuals in a bureaucracy. If you don't feel valued and protected by your employer, the rest of the workplace wellness discussion is meaningless.
Yes, many of us are in our late 50's and early 60's and plan on working longer then our predecessors. Even though we have already worked 20-30+ years for DSHS, we still want to be productive and considered important members of the team. We have a lot to offer in experience and wisdom, and could and should be used in mentoring younger staff. But we also need support as we go through the aging process. In the 1980/90's we had some wellness activities that encouraged nutrition, taking healthy breaks and how to deal with stress. Activities and classes were offered on sight during lunch hours or designated health days. Unit meetings that are focused on health and wellness are another way of getting information out to staff. Offering prizes for participation is a great motivator as well. Puzzles, word games, scavenger hunts (both real and virtual), with the health & wellness or professional growth theme are fun and educational. This concept must be encouraged and supported from top management to staff. Healthy staff are more producitve, have good attitudes and want to grow in their professions. Our office is looking at adding a health and wellness link to our Home Page. We haven't finalized anything yet.
A weekly bicycle ride on the Chehalis Western Trail or mountain biking at Capitol Forest. Groups that take walks on their breaks.
Just now became aware of this program. Regarding workshops, it would be nice if agencies were encouraged to allow staff to attend.
I would like to see programs to help people stop smoking and lose weight. These problems effect health and lossed productivity.
Opportunities to attend workshops on career development that are offered locally. Inormation on agencies that aniticpate hiring, what type of jobs are going to be in demand and what skills are needed for them.
Would like to see health and wellness activities provided in our office (2x/yr)
Wellness activities at work. Support (just allowing building space)for exercise rooms that can be used on breaks. REAL support for teleworking.
Some kind of monetary reward or gift certificate for not taking sick days.
1. Employees should be allowed to access wellness websites such as bicycling websites at work.
1. Employees should be allowed to access wellness websites such as bicycling websites at work.
Set up an in-office opportunity for Flu' vaccine in the fall. Set up an in-office opportunity for tesing for Diabetes, Colesteral (sp?) weight, BMI, mental health questions so that we can go during office hours to talk to individual professionals about these items, and to get references to our MDs if needed.
Perhaps get a bus to pick up persons willing to travel to a destination. Meet at a park n ride or stop at park n rides along the I5 corridor. This may save travel expense and stress for persons going to a training in an unfamiliar large town and or area.
With all the changes coming at us, and the stresses we all have with families, I think we really need to have focus on wellness: proper nutrition, how much sleep do we really need, stress management, etc. This should include the whole being, physical, mental, emotional, spiritual. The healthier we are, the better we can serve our clients and families.
Provide on-sie yoga or other health activities at little or no cost. Yoga, Tai Chi or other basic, safe, acttivities on site would be very popular.
I am able to read about growth, however, it is not promoted to me locally.
Yes!
Use Blackboard (online learning). Too expensive to have printed material, trainers, etc. and can't afford to take time away for fairs, classes and the like. Need something that we can click on for info, if we're not interested we can easily delete or save for later. Online learning can be done 24/7-whenever we have a break.
Western Washington U in Bellingham had great trainers and great classes in the late 80's and early 90's. One class in particular was Stress Management. This would help morale and individual health a lot. The yearly Health tests and fitness fair put on in each CSO helped people to determine where they were on many items including cholesterol and fitness. An A1c would also help to catch diabetes early.
Ideas on how to form wellness support groups at local area offices.
I was unaware of website. Need more information sent to my email to tell me about issues, classes and where to find more information.
By and large, I think the opportunities are usually there for professional growth and training. It's usually a matter of getting the agency to "spring" for any expenses, be it overtime, course fees, or materials. For me, that has been the frustrating part. The Budget climate has been the primary reason for not being able to attend quality and significant training. This probably doesn't count as an idea and falls more into the complaint category. For that I do apologize. In my career field the trainging and upgrading is out there, usually private sector; it just takes some funds to attain it. I do understand. Just venting a bit. But I do wonder, how much money is being used to accomplish this survey, when perhaps these funds could be made available for actual training needs?
Stress reduction and team building built into the everyday work routine is critical to the well being of staff and the youth we take care of everyday. Self-care is critical as well as opportunities for growth and mentoring.
A clearinghouse to provide easy access to information, skills development and resources would be helpful.
Essentially, I think that you need to provide the training during work hours or give flex time. Staff working graveyards are often reguired to attend mandatory training that is set up for days and swings. This creates hostility and apathy.
"Wellness" is not a real word. I cannot take this survey.
yes;provide health and wellness activities for people over sixty;and our diebitic.
1. You left our one important option in #5 above, and this is one of my 3 choices -- articles on the agency intranet sites. 2. Please keep in mind that at MAA in Olympia, employees have a 30-minute-only lunch hour and that we work a variety of shifts, so lunchtime presenters wouldn't be very effective.
We have a masseuse come in every other week and give chair massages. It really helps with the stress. I would like to see female state workers get reduced rates at places other than Gold's Gym and the Y. I personally like to work out at Shapes because it is for women only.
Offer fitness classes during lunch hours and/or before and after work hours. Suggestions are yoga, aerobics, dance.
Free (or inexpensive) workshops, with speakers, offered to anyone who'd like to attend. More columns in newsletters or an e-zine with advice from experts in various fields such as professional growth, career/education advice, motivation, health, and psychology. Education advice. I'm back in college and would have liked some help on finding a good online college and finding financial aid. I would also be willing to give advice on completing a degree at an online college.
Interagency,competiton..bowling, softball etc
in office exercise progams that can be done on lunch break. Give staff an extra 1/2 at lunch (2-3X per week) break if they participate in an in office (or close) exercise program Start a "Healthy Washington" In office screenings for blood pressure, cholestrol, body fat, stop smoking, loose weight, mamograms, fitness level etc. Utah has a similar program for State workers
Brown bag lunch meetings are a good way of getting people involved. It always helps to get people there if there is something free offered - cookies, small office supplies, etc. there's no doubt that people come for the free stuff but at least it gets them there and becomes beneficial to them.
How important the connection between wellness and employee efficieny is---what the State will do to continue this philosophy.
While #1 only allowed for 3 choices, many of us find ourselves in a roll-reversal--becomeing our parents parent. Elder car, end of life issues and being a parent to our parents is something almost all of us will face.
Information on jobs outside our agency for older working force. Possibilites doing like work after retirment in the private/other agencies
Develop a system to provide state employees discounts for fitness programs.
Health and Wellness: Workshops to help us cope with Secondary Trauma and depression related to our jobs.
Health and wellness programs need to be carefully and thoughtfully presented. Some managers push people into some programs that they are not comfortable with. I had a manager "shame" me for not joining a walking group set up through a health and wellness program. For the most part, I didn't like the people I worked with and had no desire whatsoever to spend every break and lunch with them too. UGH! That would've been enough to make me sick! Also, some people are unable to participate in such programs due to medical conditions they prefer not to disclose to their employer. Please remind managers that employees are not required to participate in these programs. They are not part of tehir job duties and they should not be pressured or shamed into participating. Thanks! ******************************************************** Career advancement is definitely something that should be addressed. ESPECIALLY for people who do not have a four-year degree. There are so many bright, talented, experienced people who are unable to promote simply because they lack the degree. Many jobs really shouldn't even require a degree. More jobs need to have an equivalent experience alternative. In-training paths need to be created for more than just the office assistant and other lower-level job classes. Train people into technical and management roles. If a degree is absolutely required, send them to school. Teach managers to encourage creativity and education. Teach employees to take risks and pursue the future they desire.
Use the size of the group to negotiate deals on purchase of items, like reasonable rates for full-spectrum lights to help with SAD, pedometers for counting steps, digital food scales, etc.
Yes I would. Anything to promote health and wellness. Issues surrounding the aging baby boomer workforce to focus on the importance of diet, exercise, health awareness, activities and issues pertaining to our aging parents.
I would like to see our agency/state offer a one day per year career enhancement day. This would be like a personal paid day that could be used for approved workshops regarding stress managemement, career developement or many other related areas.
I would like to know, that these activities and special events are supported and approved by the Supervisor, Manager, Director....
I have not been here but 2 months so I don't really know what is being offered currently or in the past. I would really be interested in a mentoring program or any learning resources that are available to me as far as moving ahead in the agency.
My name is David Fichtenberg, tel: 360-725-1801. I work at MAA in the Division of Audit and Information Systems. By background is in biostatistics, program evaluation, research investigation, and experimental design. I am happy to discuss in more detail any of the items discussed below. My job includes using statistical design and program evaluation skills. Whatever activities or other health and wellness support are selected, an effort should be made to test or evaluate the effectiveness of the support in actually bringing about desired changes. Much too often management will make decisions based on 'professional judgement' of what impacts might be expected by a particular type of support activity - vs. actually doing an experiment and formally evaluate the impact of the support activity. For example, outcome measures to evaluate the effectiveness of the support activity should be established. This should at least include: Data now available to management: - Absenteeism from work due to sick leave - Cost of medical and dental care. Data for this is at least available for State employees on the Uniform Medical and Dental plans since the State gets the bills for the care of these employees. It is possible that some consent form might be needed. Using a random sample of employyes other measures possible with employee consent: weight (we already would know Age and Sex). Questionaires can ask about Diet, exercise, and other health promoting activities. In this way the State will have some sort of 'Base Line' of health realthed matters by which to compare changes and to monitor improvements. For any random sample it is important that the sample be SMALL enough so that there are the resources to get high return of questionnaires and still have a large enough sample for statistical accuracy. So a sample of 400 with 95% return is much better than sending out 4000 questionaires with only a 50% return. People who do not respond to the original questionnaire can be sent 2nd copies, called on the phone, and even personally visited in order to get about 95% return (but to do this may require a modest sample). The above sample used to get 'base line' measures can also be used to evaluate impacts of activities being considered by management. For exampele: Select at random 60 employees say 50 and over (who may especially need support on diet and exercise) and find out their current practices. Then contact 1/2 of those selected and ask, encourage that they be in a 'focus group' to evaluate a presentation, class, or other support program. Perhaps if the participation is on work time, then the random sampled employees that fall into the 'focus group' can be REQUIRED to participate if the activity is on work time. Then evaluate changes between the two comparison groups of those asked and not asked to participate in the 'focus group'. This will allow a fair comparison and that will not depend on 'self selection bias' due to those especially interested in health selecting to join the programs and show positive changes. I will be happy to discuss possible experimental designs that can accomodate to 'real world' limitations. Regarding specific support activities, please consider: 1. More on 'self management' that could address the dynamics of directing our time and energy, human relationships and getting along with people. This could include topics like: books like: - Seven habits of highly effective people - Getting to Yes: a book about the process of negotiating and working with others - Emotional Intelligence - You Just Dont' Understand (how men and women communicate differently) Also books that try to address healthy living in a 'holistic' manner, i.e. that address diet, exercise, stress management, and related topics. This could be programs based on books like the Dr. Dean Ornish Reversing Heart Disease Program and like the actual week-long seminar Dr. Ornish's group, Preventive Medicine Foundation in Sausalito CA, puts on. The above topics are connected with 'work place wellness' and 'stress managment' which I check above. 2. In each geographic area there should be a facility and or other resource available to state employees (and perhaps others) to support physical fitness activities, e.g. showers available in a building or nearby building, steeply discounted rates at nearby gyms. Funding could be similar to the 'Commute Trip Reduction' (CTR) program. 3. Vending machines and / or cafeterias in State facilities would include 'healthful' food alternatives that are consistent with the Dr. Dean Ornish reversing heart disease and/or prevention diets. 4. Adopt policies that allow workers some additional time from work to participate in health related activities, e.g. allowing, say, up to 30 or 45 min of work time to do excercise or health related activity during the day (and that may be contiguous with a break or lunch period.) I believe some private companies did this and found workers were more productive. 5. Do some of the above, especially #4, as a formal experiment to see if providing the above additional support or activities impacts absenteeism and/or cost of medical care. That is, say, select a random sample of 2000 state workers in an age range where absenteeism and/or medical care costs tend to be higher, e.g. over 50 years old. For half the workers, try to encourage them to participate in the supported health activities that are being evaluated. Then measure if the impacts on absenteeism and/or medical costs reported. Measuring change in medical costs will be especially easy if only employees in the Uniform Medical Plan and Uniform Dental Plan are selected for the random sample since the State gets and pays the bills for these people. I hope the above is helpful. David Fichtenberg
FOOD SERVICE IDEA:Provide organic food items at cafateria sites as allternatives to commercial foods. Fresh fruit, vegtables, etc.
I WOULD LIKE SOME TESTING DONE HERE AT THE OFFICE. BLOOD WORK, WEIGHT, ETC. THIS WAS DONE IN OUR OFFICE ITS BEEN AWHILE AND IT WAS NICE TO GET THIS DONE AND VERY INFORMATIONAL.
Can a program be created to reimburse costs for health club/excercise class fees? I have a friend in federal employment who is reimbursed 1/2 of her jazzercise class fees by her employer as an incentive to stay active and healthy. Could we implement a similar program? It sure makes sense to do so.
I remember when they used to have a State wide Womans Conference. I really enjoyed those.
Wellness committee. Have carwashes, sell healthy foods, etc to raise money for exercise equipment in our workout room.
Never heard of the newsletter.
SORRY THIS IS LATE BUT I'VE BEEN ON A/L. I THINK THE LIST PROVIDED IS PRETTY COMPREHENSIVE. I WILL NEED MORE TIME TO DETERMINE IF THERE IS ANYTHING ELSE TO ADD.
Alternative to prescription intervention, natural remedies.
YES, I WOULD LIKE TO SEE MENTORING FOR THOSE THAT WISH TO ADVANCE AND CHANGE CAREERS IN STATE SERVICE.
I am personally interested in knowing how it is decided what will be covered on our health insurance policies. For example, insurance will pay for heart disease, lung disease, scerosis of the liver, etc, but will not assist the severely obese. The attitude is that obesity is self-induced, but so are these diseases. In fact, if obesity was resolved, many of these other problems would not exist. I believe health issues, especially wieght affects ones ability to perform in the workplace. Insurance should help everybody! How can one get involved in this topic?
I truly believe that dealing with stress should almost be a mandatory training. It is so crucial for one's overall well-being. I know from experience what stress can do and after 27 years with the agency, I am just now learning how to deal with stress and how NOT to get stressed as my well-being is more important.
