TUMWATER — Preventing a young shooting victim from bleeding to death, wrestling with an armed assailant, and wading into a murky swamp to rescue a motorist are some of the heroic actions taken by men and women who provided critical aid when it was most needed. Next week, they will all be honored for their life-saving efforts.

In all, 21 men and women will receive the Governor’s Lifesaving Award and will be featured guests at the 61st Governor’s Industrial Safety and Health Conference on Sept. 26 and 27 at the Spokane Convention Center.

The conference, sponsored by the Governor’s Industrial Safety and Health Advisory Board and the Department of Labor & Industries (L&I), includes several safety demonstrations, workshops, and special events such as the 15th Annual Forklift Rodeo and the 39th Annual Poletop Rescue Competition.

The Lifesaving Awards are presented on the first day of the conference during the opening ceremony. Recipients are selected by an independent committee of the conference advisory board comprised of business and labor representatives. The awards will be presented by Laura Papetti, KREM 2 Morning Show news anchor.

This year, those receiving the honor include a Bremerton school teacher who came to the aid of a student who had been shot; Grays Harbor County employees who saved a deputy from an armed assailant; a Snohomish County PUD worker who waded into a murky swamp to rescue a woman from a sinking car; a Lewis County deputy who went into a burning house to save a disabled woman; and several others who performed CPR or took other swift lifesaving action.

View this fact sheet for a complete list of the award recipients and a description of their life-saving actions, or contact L&I Public Affairs at 360-902-5413 to obtain a copy.

The conference remains open for registration. For more information about the conference, visit www.wagovconf.org.
