You filed your workers' compensation claim, what happens next?

Watch for a follow-up email

An email confirmation with your claim number will be sent soon after completing your Report of Accident. The email also contains instructions on how to track the progress of your claim online and contact your claim manager.

You won't be eligible for benefits without information from a doctor. Your doctor will be updating your claim based on your visit.

Bring your printed claim to your doctor's office

This will save you time and help us start your benefits sooner.

Can't print your claim?

Let your doctor's office know you completed your portion of the Report of Accident online, and give them your claim number.

Expand/collapseIf you miss more than three days of work

The sooner you can return to work after an injury, whether in a light-duty job or modified job (with your healthcare provider's okay), the more likely you are to recover and earn your pre-injury salary.

Make sure you:

  • Keep in contact with your employer and ask about light-duty work.
  • Ask your provider about medical restrictions and possible return-to-work options.
  • Notify L&I if you don't earn as much money doing light duty work. L&I may help supplement your salary while you recover.

If you are eligible for wage-replacement benefits, and no further information is needed, L&I sends the first benefit check within 14 days of receiving the report. More information about benefits.

L&I may work with your employer and health-care provider to coordinate your safe and timely return to work.

Make sure that you:

  • Get appropriate medical care.
  • Tell your employer about your work-related injury or disease.
  • Participate in any treatment prescribed.
  • Read all the documents we mail to you.

If any of the following happen, contact us right away:

  • Your claim information is incorrect or needs updating.
  • Your provider updates your prognosis, diagnosis or return-to-work status.
  • You move or change health care providers.
