Our summer 2009 issue of SHARP Focus, "Getting the word out about occupational safety and health," listed several trade journal articles by SHARP's researchers. This was our most viewed newsletter for several years.

Given the popularity of our summer edition, we're advancing this theme by highlighting our most popular web-based publications for 2009. These publications offer SHARP insight on occupational safety and health.

Workplace Bullying: What Everyone Needs to Know (176 KB PDF)
Workplace bullying refers to repeated, unreasonable actions of individuals (or a group) directed towards an employee (or a group of employees), which is intended to intimidate and creates a risk to the health and safety of the employee(s).

Hazards to Truck Drivers Loading and Unloading (617 KB PDF / 2 min)
Loading and unloading materials, goods and products from trucks is a daily activity in many businesses. It is also a regular and frequent source of workplace fatalities. In Washington State there were 10 workplace fatalities while loading and unloading trucks in 2004. From years 2000 to 2004 there were 26 workplace fatalities associated with loading or unloading activities in Washington State. 16 of the 26 incidents involved truck drivers.

Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning from internal combustion forklifts is common in Washington State. This document illustrates the health dangers to employees and the economic effects of CO poisoning.

Preventing Injuries in the Trucking Industry (973 KB PDF / 3 min)
This Focus Report provides detailed information on injuries in Washington State's trucking industry. The trucking industry has some of the highest workers' compensation claim rates and costs in Washington State. Data in this report are from 1997 to 2005 (fatalities from 1998 to 2005), with detailed data for the 4 largest trucking sub-sectors (General Freight, Specialized Freight, Couriers and Messengers, and Waste Management).

Fatal Work-Related Motor Vehicle Traffic Crashes in Washington State, 1998 - 2007 (853 KB PDF / 2 min)
In Washington State, motor vehicle traffic crashes are the leading cause of work-related injury fatalities. Workers from many industries operate different types of motor vehicles to make deliveries, visit job sites, serve clients, make repair and sales calls, travel to meetings, and numerous other purposes. From 1998 to 2007, 190 motor vehicle drivers and passengers lost their lives in work-related roadway crashes, accounting for 22% of all occupational injury deaths in the state.
