Clean and accessible bathrooms are as important at work as they are at home.

Health problems can be created or exacerbated when bathrooms are not

  • readily available,
  • sanitary, and
  • adequately equipped with toilet paper and running water for washing up.

Problems with security, privacy, ventilation can lead to health consequences by discouraging use.

Also, employers will need to provide the appropriate amount of toilets and urinals based on the number of employees at each workplace or job site. (See Rules & Requirements section).

Information provided in this topic page can help employers and employees identify and evaluate existing and foreseeable safety and health hazards. It also provides resources to help with training, prevention methods, and the development and implementation of a required written accident prevention program (APP).
