Tri-County Truss Plant in Burlington Receives State Safety Recognition
 

On June 19, 2008, Tri-County Truss of Burlington received the Voluntary Protection Program Star in recognition for successfully implementing the 19 elements of the program and making those elements effective in practice throughout the company. Tri-County Truss manufactures wooden roof trusses used in the construction industry. It is the first plant of its kind in the state to receive the prestigious workplace-safety award.

“Safety is a core value at our company, and we take a proactive approach that involves all employees doing their part to make sure no one gets hurt on the job,” said Gary Lund, Tri-County Truss general manager . “This award means a lot to us because it validates the commitment we have to safety.” Tri-County employs 132 people and specializes in engineered wood roof and floor trusses.

The Tri-Count Truss site earned its VPP STAR through commitment, leadership and extensive employee participation in developing a continuously improving safety and health program and safety record. The site applied for the VPP in July 2007 and received an on-site review by a team of five DOSH safety and health professionals in November 2007. The site maintains their status by continuous improvement of their safety and health programs, conducting comprehensive annual self-evaluations of their safety and health programs and will continue to receive periodic onsite DOSH VPP reviews.

“Tri-County Truss is a STAR-level site because of their daily focus and commitment to safety and the partnership between management and employees. This level of achievement is a great accomplishment and we feel privileged to have been able to work with them,” said Judy Schurke, L&I director. “Other companies in Skagit County should consider the VPP program, because it’s good for company morale and for helping keep everyone safe at work.”

On June 19 th 2008, the Burlington site celebrated achieving the prestigious VPP STAR status with an award ceremony for guests and employees. Mel James, the State Consultation, Education and Outreach Program Manager presented the Star Flag and plaque to the site.
