CAREER DAY at Kent-Meridan High School

Date: Thursday, April 24, 2014
Time: 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Location: Kent-Meridian High School
We take in 60 speakers from a variety of careers. Each speaker will present for about 50 minutes - 5 times throughout the day in a classroom setting. (30-35 students per session) Regular classes are cancelled for the day. Instead, our students go from speaker to speaker discovering a world of possibilities.
We would like to introduce you to the students and then have you explain what you do (your career/job), how you got there, i.e., your educational background, work experience, what you like and dislike about your career/job, what a typical day looks like/your basic job responsibilities and other positions within your organization leaving a few minutes at the end of each session for questions and answers. A panel of a few from your organization works well too.
This event is very popular with our students – Career Day tends to have a high attendance rate. For some, the light bulb goes on and all of a sudden, they have new goals for their future.
Please consider being a speaker at this event or sending another representative from your organization.
Please RSVP to
Debbie Theisen, Campus Manager
253/373-7416 Debbie.theisen@kent.k12.wa.us
Lunch and lunchtime entertainment will be provided to speakers as well as a continental breakfast in the library during speaker orientation at 7 a.m.

As you undoubtedly realize, about 65% of U.S. jobs require a different type of career training than a four-year baccalaureate college education.  To help juniors and seniors learn about a variety of post-high school options, two of the high schools in the Vancouver School District will host “Options for Success” information fairs.
Your school or organization is cordially invited to participate in either or both of these fairs. Representatives from community, specialty and technical colleges, apprenticeship programs, the military, and government-sponsored job-training programs in Southwest Washington are being invited to reserve a table for an information display at the fairs. Students will be encouraged to talk with program representatives and take literature about training programs of interest to them.
These events are not intended as hiring fairs. Rather, the purpose of the options fairs is to help students find out about pathways to prepare for enjoyable and rewarding careers, other than attending a four-year college or university.
Please let me know as soon as possible whether someone from your organization or school intends to participate in either or both of the fairs.

Location: New Market Skills Center
7299 New Market Street SW

For all students within the Pac-Mountain Region who want to explore Careers in the Construction Industry
HOW YOU CAN HELP:
Desk Top Displays: This is a great opportunity for businesses, or those with projects, to show students options available within the region. All vendors, schools, and those in the industry are welcome to setup a display. Please contact Matt Gordon for specific needs.
Hands on Demonstrations: Trades persons, in the construction industry, are able to build and create the ideas drawn on a blueprint from what they are able to do with their hands. Students need the opportunity to see, as well as feel, what it takes to become part of a team. There are plenty of spaces available for businesses and trades organizations to offer opportunities in their field for students. Contact Matt Gordon for more information.
Equipment Operations: This is what the kid in all of us really enjoys. Pavers, back hoes, forklifts, cranes, lifts and more…Heavy equipment gets the trades’ people to their work and the materials needed to get the job done. We have space available for any type of equipment the construction industry uses.
For more information, specific needs, and to confirm your spot, contact: Matt Gordon, Construction Trades, 360-750-4457
