Periodic Testing

The conveyance(s) in building(s) are required to have periodic testing in accordance with ASME A17.1 Elevator Code to ensure they meet safety and maintenance requirements.

The Department of Labor and Industries Elevator Section will, on our annual inspection, determine that all applicable code required tests have been completed. We will do this by placing a "Test Log" form on the wall in the conveyance machine room. This log denotes certain tests that you are required to have completed periodically on your conveyance(s). Enclosed is a list of the types of conveyances and their applicable rules, periodic tests, tags, and seal requirements as shown on the "Test Log."

Test Log Required Listing

Note, not all tests on the "Test Log" may apply to your conveyance(s).   Your elevator service company or our office can help you determine which tests are applicable.

You may also have a conveyance that does not require a "Test Log." Enclosed is a list of those types of conveyances and their applicable rules, periodic tests, tags, and seal requirements.

No Test Log Required Listing

I have enclosed two samples of "Test Logs," Blue for traction (cable) elevators (MS Word) (PDF) and Yellow for hydraulic elevators (MS Word) (PDF). Look at the one that applies to your conveyance. We’ve listed and numbered the types of tests needed along the top of the form. Listed right below each type of test is how often you need to do the test as well as the applicable ASME 17.1 rule. The years for the tests are listed on the left side of the form. For our examples, we’ve indicated that the annual test #15 (relief valve setting) on the yellow Hydraulic "Test Log" was completed by XYZ Elevator Co. on 3/27/2000. Since this is an annual test, there should be entries for the following years as tests are completed. Similarly, if you have a Traction (cable) elevator, our example on the blue "Test Log" form shows that #4 (Terminal Speed Limiting Device), a five-year test, was completed by XYZ Elevator Co. on 3/27/2000.

Please remember that qualified personnel must complete all tests.

It will be your responsibility to ensure that all applicable tests are completed timely for your type conveyance(s). If on a subsequent annual inspection (after the Test Logs are in place) our inspector finds an applicable test not completed, it will be cited as a violation and you are subject to a penalty until you are in compliance. Please call 360-902-6130 if you have questions.
