Continuing education classes gearing up

Hello —

I hear that everyone wants to know what’s happening with continuing education for elevator mechanics and contractors, so here’s the latest.

To date, two companies have applied to provide continuing education classes for L&I and both have been approved. We're past the deadline for the first class, but more are on the way. Please watch the L&I web site for new classes. You can find them here: www.LNI.wa.gov/TradesLicensing/Elevators/CalNews/Bulletins/

Check to see if you're due
About half of the 687 mechanics licensed by the State of Washington will be required to have eight hours of continuing education completed by June 30, 2006 in order to renew their licenses. Please avoid waiting until the last minute to take your training because the classes could fill up and leave you unable to renew your license.

Looking for more trainers
I’m still looking for continuing education providers for license categories 02 through 07, so please contact me if you know of a qualified provider.

Sales staff — Don't be surprised by the inspector!
Contractor sales staff and supervisors: Ever sell a conveyance alteration to a customer only to find that you didn’t include all of the required elements, resulting in unexpected costs? I can help you avoid that embarrassing problem! I will give a course (not continuing education) that will outline the requirements for alterations to conveyances as part of L&I’s series of contractor training days statewide. The next one will be held in Tacoma (see the Calendar section below for details). I want to invite all of you to come and see what L&I requires when an alteration permit is approved. You’ll know what to expect when the inspector comes to look at your job.

Feel free to contact me anytime at 360-902-6128 or by e-mail at dayl235@LNI.wa.gov. I look forward to seeing you soon.

Have a safe ride,

Jack Day
Chief Elevator Inspector

Mechanic and contractor licensing tests ready

License tests are ready for the 01, 03, 05, 07, and 08 elevator mechanic categories. The test for the 04 category will be completed soon and the 02 and 06 category tests will be ready shortly thereafter. The test for contractors also is ready. A few people have taken the tests so far. If you have applied for the test, Jack Day will be contacting you shortly to come and sit for the exam.

Data plate requirement

The data plate provides information to the inspector, building owner and maintenance company as to what version of the ASME A17.1 elevator code was in effect at the time an elevator was permitted for installation and or alteration. This requirement was retroactive with the adoption of the ASME 1996 code and is in the new ASME A17.1 in section 8.9. Please note that the code addition that should be represented on the data plate is the code adopted by the state at the time the permit for installation or alteration was signed by central office. This data plate is only required for conveyances listed in the WAC that are regulated by the ASME A17.1 standard.

Machine logs need to stay put

Please remember that a conveyance’s machine room log is the responsibility of the conveyance owner. If you need a new log, you can download a copy from the L&I web site at one of the following locations:

• For hydraulic elevators: www.LNI.wa.gov/Forms/pdf/621046af.pdf

• For traction elevators: www.LNI.wa.gov/Forms/pdf/621047af.pdf

Also, please remember not to remove the previous machine room logs from the machine room. They should remain in the machine room where inspectors, mechanics and potential future owners can find them.
