Workers are entitled to a safe and healthy workplace
Businesses must follow Washington state rules protecting workers on the job.
If an unsafe working condition exists on the job, the worker should:
- Tell their employer.
- If that doesn't help, the worker can tell L&I about the safety concern: How to file a safety complaint with L&I. The worker can ask that their name not be revealed to the business.
Protection from discrimination
Even if the business does find out that the worker has filed a safety complaint with L&I, it is against the law for them to discriminate against the worker for reporting unsafe conditions at work. If this happens, L&I can help. Here's how: File a Safety and Health Discrimination Complaint and/or call the nearest L&I office.
