Registration opens for worker safety and health conference

TUMWATER - Registration has opened for the 49th annual Governor's Industrial Safety and Health Conference scheduled for early October in Spokane, where occupational safety and health will occupy center stage for two days.

Registration forms for the Oct. 4 and 5 conference are available online at /wisha/gov-conf/govconf2000.htm, by calling toll-free 1-888-451-2004 or by visiting any of L&I's 22 service centers across the state. The $45 registration fee covers two days' worth of activities, including motivational keynote address, blockbuster presentations, panel discussions, trade fair and a variety of demonstrations, competitions and exhibitions. All events take place at the Spokane Convention Center.

This annual event, alternating between Spokane and Seattle, draws more than 2,000 safety and health professionals, employers, workers and others interested in making Washington workplaces safer and more healthful.

Conference attendees will have their choice of dozens and dozens of activities. The opening session will feature Charlie Morecraft, a nationally known speaker whose compelling account of the industrial incident that nearly cost him his life sends a powerful message about the importance of workplace safety and health. Morecraft, a refinery worker, provides personal insight into the devastating incident that engulfed him in flames, changing forever his body, his family and his future.

Attendees will meet last year's real-life heroes and heroines, who will be recognized for being in the right place at the right time and taking the right action to save a life. There's the championship finals of the forklift operators' rodeo, a poletop-rescue competition for utility workers and much, much more.

The blockbuster presentations will cover the topics of road rage, workplace violence, the state' s new ergonomics rule, accident investigation procedures and others.

More than 100 exhibitors will feature and display their products and services at the trade show, open both days of the conference.
