Automated phone system available for contractor information
TUMWATER - The Department of Labor & Industries' contractor-registration database now can be accessed quickly and easily with a new automated telephone system.
To access the interactive voice-response system, call 800-647-0982 or 360-902-5226. Recorded instructions will prompt you to press various phone keys for the information you're seeking.
To use the new system, you must know the contractor's L&I registration number (not to be confused with a separate business-license number). It generally is available from the contractor or on printed materials such as phone book business-page ads or business cards.
Contractor information also is available on the Web at www.lni.wa.gov/contractors/contractor.asp. Or, you can speak with a customer-service specialist by calling one of the same two phone numbers and hitting "0" to be transferred out of the automated system. However, a wait may be involved for help by a specialist.
For consumer protection, state law requires construction contractors to be registered, electrical contractors to be licensed and plumbing contractors to be certified. L&I's database provides basic information about those contractors, as well as information about their bonding and insurance levels and summons and complaints, among other things.
