Spokane conference will focus on worker safety and health

SPOKANE – There is still time to register for the 59th annual Governor’s Industrial Safety and Health Conference, coming to the Spokane Convention Center Sept. 29 and 30.

"In these tough times, we know businesses have to watch every dollar, but that should not mean cutting back on workplace safety," said Sharon Ness, president of the Governor’s Industrial Safety and Health Advisory Board. “Thanks to all the industry partners and volunteers involved in organizing this conference, it remains one way workers and employers can get important safety and health training at a reasonable cost."

The conference theme this year is "Safety and Health – Words to Live By.”  The event is sponsored each year by the Advisory Board and the Department of Labor & Industries with support from industry partners

The conference begins with the Lifesaving and Humanitarian Awards, presented this year to 16 people who took extraordinary actions to save a life or try to save a life. The presentation will include a special recognition for fallen officers from across the state.

In addition to key industry workshops there will be feature presentations on combustible dust, investigating workplace accidents and surviving a workplace emergency. New this year is a Demo Hall, where exhibitors will offer full-scale demonstrations of their safety products and, in some cases, a hands-on experience.

The scheduled industry workshops will cover topics ranging from fall protection and respirators to workplace violence and distracted driving. The perennial favorites – the 37th Annual Poletop Rescue Competition and the 13th Annual Forklift Rodeo - both take place on the first day of the conference. Registration for the two-day event is $180 before Sept. 28 or $200 at the door. Groups of 10 or more get a $50 discount on those prices; registration for students and apprentices is $25.
