Tumwater – Do you have an innovative idea for improving workplace safety and health or a creative solution to help injured workers return to work soon after an injury? If so, the Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) would like to hear from you and may help fund your project.

A new round of grants is now available through L&I's Safety and Health Investment Projects (SHIP) grant program.

The program offers two types of grants:

  • Safety and Health grants are awarded for new ideas that encourage workplace safety and health and prevent injuries and occupational illnesses. Grants may be up to $125,000. The deadline for applying for a safety and health grant is Oct. 18.
  • Return to Work grants help industries bring to life creative solutions that will get injured employees back on the job sooner and reduce long-term disability. Grants may be up to $85,000. The deadline for applying for a Return to Work grant is Sept. 30.

"Anyone with an idea for a grant project can call and bounce it off us," said Anar Imin, grant manager with the SHIP Program. "And we can help in the early stages by answering questions about how to apply and the application process."

Since the program began in 2007, SHIP grants have funded 65 projects developed by employers, academic institutions, labor and business organizations, and agencies advocating workplace safety. Special consideration is given to projects that address specific types of injuries and industries and to projects that meet the needs of small business.
