Licensing & Registration

The Department of Labor & Industries issues license, registration, and certificates to construction, electrical, elevator contractors, and electrical administrators. Contractors and administrators no longer receive a wallet sized card.

Below is an example of a wall license that is issued by the department. These are issued to Construction, Electrical and Elevator contractors and Electrical Administrators. These licenses are on green card stock with the Washington State seal in the background.

Contractor License

Tradespeople, (electricians, trainees, elevator mechanics, plumbers, and manufactured home installers) must have their certificate/license card with them when on the jobsite. Tradespeople are issued a durable plastic wallet sized card. These cards have a color stripe to help identify their qualifications and certification. An example of the cards we issue to individuals is shown below.

Master Electrician License

  •  Yellow Stripe
    • A yellow stripe indicates that a person is certified to work without supervision within a specific specialty. Individuals with a yellow stripe have qualified for, taken, and passed an examination for the specific specialty listed on their card. No supervision is required for these workers when they are working in their specific specialty. Some examples would include:
      • Specialty Master Electricians
      • Specialty Electricians
      • Specialty Plumbers
      • Modified Electrical Trainees (unsupervised)
  •  Green Stripe
    • A green stripe indicates that a person has journeyman status and is qualified to work in all aspects of their respective industry. No supervision is required for workers with a green stripe within their industry. Some examples would include:
      • Master General Electricians (01)
      • General Electricians (01)
      • Plumbers (01)
      • Elevator Mechanics
      • Manufactured Home Installers
  •  Red Stripe
    • A red stripe indicates that a person is a trainee or has a temporary certificate. Individuals with a red stripe have not qualified for, taken, or passed an examination for certification. Some examples would include:
      • Trainee: requires some level of supervision.
      • Temporary elevator mechanic: does not require supervision.

The department has issued these licenses and cards since September, 2011.

Licenses and cards are issued during renewal, upon approval of new licenses, or upon request for a replacement.
