The Department of Labor and Industries (L&I) Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) is in the process of making updates to the chapter 296-880 WAC, Unified safety standards for fall protection, related to leading edge work, safety monitor system requirements and roofing activity on low-pitched roofs.

In May 2023, DOSH received notification from the Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) relating to DOSH’s fall protection standard. The notification advised L&I that DOSH needed to amend our fall protection rule in chapter 296-880 WAC in order to be at least as effective as those administered by OSHA.

L&I is conducting two meetings (November 8 and November 14, 2023) to receive comments regarding the draft changes. We welcome interested stakeholders to attend one of the upcoming meetings. Stakeholder input is valuable and appreciated as we move forward with this rulemaking effort.
